Leo, the Lion, is the fifth sign of the Western Zodiac. The sign represents the Nemean lion, whose hide was impervious to attacks by mortal weapons and whose claws were sharper than swords. Hercules, set to the task to killing the lion, who was attacking innocents, strangled the lion to death, then skinned him with his own claw. Many depictions of Hercules show him wearing the lion's skin as he completed his 12 labors.
