SHUGRs (Sheep-HUman-Goat Recombinants) are a hybrid species invented by the artist Drafthorse. They inhabit an imaginary future in which an international agreement and governing body, the København Infertile Sex System (KISS), governs the production and status of genetically engineered human-nonhuman hybrids known as "recombinants" ("recons"), developed as intersterile sexual superstimuli and partners for humans with the aim of controlling human population numbers.

SHUGRs are the most numerous and popular of the recon species. They have caprine heads and two-toed unguligrade feet with delicate, goatlike hooves and naked, pink, ticklish soles extending from hock to fetlock. The teeth, torsos, arms, and hands are humanlike. A small admixture of cattle genes gives SHUGRs muscular, short-haired tails with a tuft at the end. The anus opens at the apex of a protruding conical "donut." SHUGR hair is human in distribution but sheeplike or goatlike in texture. Female external genitalia come in differing types, governed by multiple alleles at a single gene locus. The enlarged, protrusive outer labia (the "sex skin") are ridged, contrastingly colored, and hairless. SHUGR skin color is humanlike, ranging from black to pink. The hands and feet are also often contrastingly pigmented, producing darker-colored "gloves" and "stockings." Adult males have horns, goatlike beards, and human-type penises of exceptional length and girth. The pendulous scrotum contains large, caprine testicles that reflect a goatlike ability to ejaculate copiously and frequently. But whereas male goats and sheep ejaculate after 5 to 10 pelvic thrusts, SHUGR bucks require at least 15 minutes of penile stimulation to reach orgasm. With training, a talented buck can copulate vigorously for a full hour before ejaculating. (The world competitive-sex record, set in 2197, stands at 7,228 doggy-style thrusts in a human female, who came nine times before her partner finished.) Conversely, 6-7 minutes of genital stimulation will give a doe SHUGR a screaming orgasm.

The armpits, nipples, foreskin, anal cone, sex skin, scrotum, and clitoral hood of SHUGRs, and the clefts between their toes, are richly supplied with scent glands, all with their own distinctive odors. Each SHUGR body exudes a strong, complex perfume, individually compounded of musky, sweaty, fruity, and cheeselike aromas, with a distinctly "skunky" component in males. The composite smell sends an explicitly sexual message that becomes particularly powerful during erection and peaks during orgasm.

Having slightly less than a 50% human genome, SHUGRs are by law chattel slaves with diminished legal rights. Outside of the United Kingdom (where they are Crown property), SHUGRs are the exclusive property of KISS. Most live and work in KISS brothels known as sexothèques, though they may be assigned on indefinite loan as sex workers of other sorts or in various marriage-like arrangements. KISS grants SHUGRs a certain amount of freedom in choosing or changing careers in various forms of sexual slavery.

SHUGRs are by (engineered) nature sexually submissive. Though rarely masochistic in the strict sense, they enjoy being dominated, especially by humans. SHUGR females are always eager to sample new sorts of degrading and humiliating sexual experiences. SHUGR buttocks are deficient in pain nerves but enriched in erogenous sensory innervation, so that light spanking or whipping is a powerful sexual stimulus for bucks and does alike. To discourage abuse, SHUGRs wear color-coded ear tags indicating the precise shade of skin reddening at which spanking should be halted.
