Species: patagonian mara

The Patagonian mara (Dolichotis patagonum) is a cavy, one of a number of rodents native to South America (in this species' case, Argentina). Despite a superficial resemblance to long-legged rabbits, they are not lagomorphs and are actually more closely related to guinea pigs. They are classified as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

They are monogamous, but breeding pairs will often share a warren. Often kept as pets or in zoos, they can be quite social with humans if raised properly, but the wild ones may prefer to avoid humans, even switching to nocturnal habits just to avoid any such interaction.
