This tag describes the appearance of small bumps on the areola. They can be drawn as small circles, or merely implied by subtle painting.
The Montgomery glands are sebaceous (oil) glands, their primary function is lubricating the areola and keeping germs away from the breasts in preparation for suckling. The oil also has antibacterial properties, and research has suggested that infants may even detect the smell of the secretions, helping direct them to the breast to latch onto for feeding. The number of bumps varies from person to person from just a few, while others may have dozens.
Montgomery glands can become more prominent during pregnancy.
