The last Monday preceding May 25 is Victoria Day, a Canadian holiday since 1845. Originally celebrating the birthday of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom, it today commemorates the birthday (regardless of the actual birthdate) of Canada's sovereign, the monarch of both the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth of Nations. It is also the unofficial start of the summer season in Canada. While it is celebrated in most of the provinces, in Quebec, the day is called National Patriots' Day due to the province's French heritage.
