December 26 is Boxing Day as celebrated in the UK and throughout the former British Empire. As the second day of Christmastide (AKA the twelve days of Christmas), it was originally meant to be a holiday when gifts were given to the poor, but has evolved into a shopping holiday whereupon shoppers either return or exchange unwanted gifts or take advantage of post-Christmas sales. The day is also Saint Stephan's Day according to Catholicism, to commemorate the first Christian martyr or protomartyr.
