Artifices are genetically engineered creatures made by the mega corporation Hyperion for the purpose of being living sex dolls - perfectly customized fuck toys that will do whatever their master tells them to. The idea was to create fully functioning, intelligent life forms, indistinguishable from any one person, while modifying their genome to freely alter their behavior, personality, and physical appearance to suit the desires of their owner. As this is incredibly risky (and morally dubious), it is not possible to make artifices available to everyone, or have them be a matter of public knowledge at all. The artifice program is destined only for a tiny minority of the wealthiest and most "exclusive" citizens of Neon City, and even then, only after extensive background and current living standard checks, after which the artifice is "imprinted" to their new master. Typically, an Artifice's sex drive can only be "activated" by persons that they are "imprinted" to.

Each Artifice has certain triggers that activate their sex drive. When the triggers are pulled, a surge of sexual hormones floods their body, making them absolutely submissive. Once activated, an artifice will do anything and everything they're told, so long as it doesn't harm themselves or anyone else unreasonably. When an artifice is injured significantly, hormone regulator implants will disengage their sex drive and they will seek help. The hormone regulator is implanted on their upper back, and is not noticeable with the naked eye. The device sends signals in real time to Hyperion, so if an artifice is under distress after having their sex drive regulated, immediate action will be taken by the higher power to ensure their safety and well-being.
