Urban describes a scene set within a town or city — more specifically a densely constructed outdoor area (as opposed to a low density residential area of a city, or a scene in a city park) such as storefronts along a main street of a town, an alleyway in a large city, or a crosswalk bordered by large buildings.

Urban scenes are determined by their background elements, an urban scene may focus on a character in front of a single building, without showing the rest of the surrounding city or town area, or the focus may be primarily on a single character, with "urban elements" suggesting their location.

Urban scenes may be "grungy" with focus on litter, graffiti, damaged walls or surfaces. Cyberpunk art often depicts urban scenes.
