A flip phone is a cellphone with a "clam shell" design, these phones are made of two sections connected by a hinge, typically, one section will have a keyboard/keypad and receiver to speak into, and the other will have a display and speaker to hear from.

Flip phones entered the market between 1993 and 1996, changing in size, shape and adding capabilities over the years; by the 2000s the flip phone was ubiquitous.

While largely overtaken in the market by touchscreen smartphones, flip phones continue to be produced and sold into present day, including some examples of smartphones that use a clam shell design — these devices feature dual touch screens, or a single, flexible touch screen (if such a phone ever appears in a post, use both flip phone and smartphone for tags).
