April 20 is National Weed Day, Weed Day, Marijuana Day, the High Holiday, or 420 Day, all references to marijuana and the counterculture that has sprung up around it. According to Steven Hager of High Times, 420 originated in 1971 when the Waldos, five high school students in San Rafael, California chose to meet at the Louis Pasteur statue on their school's grounds at 4:20 PM in order to search for an abandoned cannabis crop. They eventually turned "4:20" into a code word referring to consuming cannabis. Years later, one Waldo, Dave Reddix, would end up as a roadie for Grateful Dead bassist, Phil Lesh, when the term began to spread among the band's followers.
