paintover
Art created by digitally painting over top of an existing image, including a drawn sketch, 3d rendered image, photograph, or even a previously coloured image.
This may be done to simply render the subject, add greater detail, or alter the subject.
A paintover of previously uncoloured piece of art isn't simply a color edit of lineart or a sketch, but involves adding painted detail, complex lighting, texture, and sometimes a background that didn't exist in the sketch/lineart. A paintover of a sketch or lineart will often obscure or entirely cover the lines, creating a softer and more realistic looking image. Paintovers of finished artwork may done as collaboration between two artists.
