tar pit
Tar pits are pools of asphalt. Usually formed when the crude oil seeps up to the surface by a crack, or fractures, which causing it to pool up on the surface. The lighter components of the crude oil evaporates into the atmosphere, leaving behind a black, sticky asphalt.
