March 31 is International Transgender Day of Visibility, created in 2009 by transgender activist Rachel Crandall as a reaction to a lack of LGBTQ+ recognition of the transgendered. Such lack of recognition had led to frustration over the only transgender-centered day at the time being the Transgender Day of Remembrance, which only dealt with victims of transphobic murder instead of those still living. Since then, the U.S.-based youth advocacy organization Trans Student Educational Resources has spearheaded its recognition.
