Scene is an alternative subculture that originated in the 2000s. Members of the subculture are called scene kids, scenesters, or scene kings and queens. The subculture is associated with various music genres, but particularly crunkcore, metalcore, electronic, and pop punk.
The most distinctive feature of scene fashion is the hair, which borrows the fringe bangs that often cover one eye from typical emo hairstyles, and instead focuses on the hair being big, bright, and fluffy. Coontails are a staple of scene hair.
Scene is often confused with emo, although the two have distinct differences. Scene fashion is much more colorful, as it tries to draw attention to the wearer.
Many scene kids were furries, and a subgenre of sparkledog art involved scene fashion, particularly with the gaudy accessories and big fluffy hair. These types of sparkledogs were known as scenedogs.
Elements of scene fashion
- Brightly colored clothing, and clothing with prints and patterns
- Skinny jeans
- Sunglasses, particularly shutter shades and any oversized sunglasses
- Piercings
- Studded belts and belts with large buckles
- Wristbands
- Necklaces with large plastic symbols, such as diamonds and skulls
- Copyrighted characters such as Hello Kitty, GIR from Invader Zim, Gloomy Bear and Domo
- Dinosaurs and the word "rawr"
- Large, colorful hair bows
- Raccooon-eye eyeliner
- Plastic pearl necklaces
- Colorful beaded bracelets known as kandi
- Bondage pants
- Band t-shirts
