the devil (tarot)
One of the Major Arcana defined in tarot. In typical portrayals, the Devil is a diabolic figure (often Baphomet) holding a man and woman in bondage. Both of the humanoids' bonds are loose enough that they could free themselves with no effort; the pair is there of their own free will. Horns and tails extend from their bodies, with one tail ending in a bunch of grapes and the other ending in a burning flame; as they indulge in devilish pleasures, they become more like the Devil.
In cartomancy, the upright Devil arcanum is interpreted as the shadow self, attachment, addiction, restriction, and sexuality.
The reversed Devil arcanum is interpreted as being freed of restricting beliefs, exploring dark thoughts, and detachment.
