Mandibles are the extra bits on the front of the mouth of arthropod characters, such as bees, moths, mantis, and other insects.
On some real-life insects, the mandibles completely cover the mouth, or leave the moth exposed. Anthro characters would typically not have the mouth covered by mandibles, but it may happen.
