An insult of endearment is an insult used as a term of endearment.

At face value, the words are abrasive, but careful attention to context indicates it was made either in jest, instead being used to convey playfulness or affection and lacking serious hurtful intent. A multi-word insult of endearment may consist of a traditional term of endearment mixed with an insulting adjective, in which case it is more apparent. May also be juxtaposed to an explicit declaration of positivity, such as "I love you".

Using insults of endearment are a signature of a flustered tsundere. Often overlaps with teasing, humiliation, and kinkshaming, with it being hard to discern during bullying or degradation. In extreme cases, the insulting word may be an appropriated slur.
