Species: bulbasaurus phylloxyron
Bulbasaurus phylloxyron is an extinct prehistoric species of geikiid dicynodont. It is type species and so-far only known member of the genus Bulbasaurus.
The holotype fossil (SAM-PK-K11235) was discovered by archaeologist Dr. Roger M.H. Smith in Fraserburg, Northern Cape, South Africa. Initially assumed to be a member of the oudenodontid genus Tropidostoma, Dr. Smith along with Dr. Christian F. Kammerer defined a new species in 2017.
The taxonomic name of Bulbasaurus phylloxyron translates to "bulbous reptile leaf razor". Officially, the genus was named for its nasal bosses, which are unusually bulbous among geikiids, but Dr. Kammerer stated "similarities between this species and certain other squat, tusked quadrupeds may not be entirely coincidental", as it certainly appears to be named after the Pokémon species, Bulbasaur.
