October 31 – November 1 is Samhain (pronounced SAH-win), a Gaelic festival starting and ending at sundown. With Imbolc, Beltane, and Lughnasadh, it is one of the four Gaelic seasonal festivals set halfway between the solstices and equinoxes. Samhain in particular marked the Celtic new year, marking the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter and the darker half of the year. Traditionally, it was believed that the barriers between the real world and the spirit world were at their weakest on this date. Many of its traditions have influenced the modern Halloween.
