Topic: what makes you cringe and/or facepalm?

Posted under General

This topic has been locked.

The fanfiction I wrote when I was a teenager. The only good one was the last one where I look at what I created and destroy everything. That one was also a true story. I destroyed every copy on every site. I still get fan mail asking why I don't put it back, and I'm like, "I love books and I chose to destroy it. That should mean something."

Also, just how much bravado 15-year-old!me hid behind. Basically I faked interest in sex and fighting to try to appear normal. The problem wasn't how I went about it. The problem was it worked enough that nobody believes I was lying. Just the things I said and digging myself deeper because I can't ever perform the simple task of saying something that doesn't sound hostile like any normal human being can do.

this sure as heck better not be available for kids to see cause this... we have enough things trying to ruin humanity's future. let's not add this to the list.

Even without the message, that song would still be cringy. The dance moves, the voice fluctuations, it could've been done a lot better.

I feel sorry for vanilla, being pressured into a situation he clearly doesn't want to be in. Just leave him be. It reminds me of those anti-drug PSAs from primary school.

I still cringe at the Will Smith one. Not because of how cheesy it was, but because none of it even rhymed, or was forced.

i just remembered something...ugly...

4 "top 5" videos from tyrannicon... of some of the ugliest things to ever come out of character creation...

Dragon Age Inquisition note: about the last character in this one, the "Golden Deceiver". no, i am NOT trying to attack, slam, or otherwise antagonize anything...though something tells me a ticket might soon say otherwise anyway. >.>

Bloodborne o_O is that micheal jackson on the thumbnail? *shudder*

Mass Effect Andromeda oh man, that thumbnail. lol

and lastly, Fallout 4 zombie...? thumbnal

these are some ugly characters... some of these look like the whole ugly tree fell on them.

edit: whoops, got the dragon age title wrong. fixed it

I thought the whole point of char creators was to drag all the facial proportion sliders to their minimum or maximum levels and see what happens.

I facepalm when people comment on article/video without reading/watching it. This is always so stupid.

And I cringe really hard at videos with furries acting like animals/little kids.

I once made Stephen Hawking an important NPC in a fantasy D&D game.

Also, my old flash movies. Some of them are on Newgrounds. Maybe the fact that I lost the rest to a virus was a mercy. Like the real life Marauder Shields was saving me.

Full House. I can't believe I thought this crap was funny.

You want cringe? look up posts from the original Happy Tree Friends forum by the user "eaglewing". This isn't some calling out thing either. That guy, eaglewing? That was me when I was a teenager. I'm actually kind of glad most of the posts were destroyed when the site went under.

Same, except I wasn't being an edgelord back then, I was being an awkward twat when I tried to deal with getting my bullies to leave me alone back then.

There was a time that I go so mad at a bully back then, I hit him with my lunchbox...but I hit him in the ass. And when the other kids that saw it happen were laughing at me (even the bully) I didn't understand why I was being laughed at.

the reason this "Crissov" person gave for the removal of all non-latin western emoticons was this: "separate tables for upright emoticons and sideways non-emoticon line art, only :っ) :っC ಠ_ಠ and ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) (Lenny) have been removed, because they contain characters not found in Latin 1–9 (ISO 8859))"

and... to this day, this still goes unreversed. oh but emojis got added to the page... latin and eastern emojis that is.

i wonder if theres another site with a more complete list somewhere that includes ALL western emoticons. not just the latin ones.

Une thing I find really REALLY cringy is when people put glasses on furries. It just takes me out of the moment...I grew up with "furries" like Bugs Bunny and Micky Mouse...do any of them wear glasses? NO. So when I do see them on a furry character it goes from "oh, what a cute fox girl" to "oh, great, a self-insert character...UGH."

My thinking on this gets really deep, but I'll try to keep it brief...basically I feel sad for people who use being a furry as an escape from their real existence. I assume they must have been hurt by so many people in their lives they just start thinking that animals are better than people, and thus they want to BECOME an animal. I love furry art, but when I catch a whiff of that desperation...that wanting to become an animal rather than a human, it just kind of ruins the piece for me. Glasses are a signifier of that more often than not, because they're mostly left out of furry art unless the artist is trying to recreate a real person in a furry form.

1. has... it ever crossed your mind that it might just be a character design choice and nothing else? because glasses are very often used in visual storytelling. they can be used to tell what character is like (scientist, pathetic gamer, old, strict, teacher, nerdy, smart etc)

2. theres whole bunch of anthro characters who wear glasses in mainstream media. for example scrooge mcduck

3. my fursona has glasses because the character represents me. its not that deep, im not trying to escape from reality or try to become animal or whatever.

I'm fine with glasses that fit the archetype of the character, it's the random pair of glasses that irks me.

His glasses are so small I honestly forgot he even had them...he gets a pass cause he's old, and also because I'm fairly sure he's not anyone's fursona. Still, that's one character out of hundreds. The vast majority don't wear glasses.

So imagine you were like 300 pounds...is your fursona automatically 300 pounds? What if you had a club foot...does the fursona have a club foot? You're artificially imposing those restrictions. Your fursona can be, and often is for a lot of people, anything you want it to be.

Sorry to like...generalize people or whatever. I'm just trying to explain where my distaste comes from...not saying that EVERYONE who has glasses on their fursona necessarily thinks like that...glasses just remind me of those people, and they DO exist btw.

actually thats p much exactly what i do. im overweight, my fursona is too. i have ugly scarring and wounds on my body, i put them on my fursona too. i even make my fursona's hairstyle match mine. i dont want my fursona to be some sexy and flawless version of me, i just want the character to represent me realistically. only exception is that i depict often my character being gone through transitioning which i havent done yet because its ridiculously difficult to get those treatments here.

How does that work? I assume your eyesight has to be crappy in some area (nearsighted/farsighted/etc.) for the glasses to be necessary. If you wear prescription glasses describing your eyesight as "great" is a bit of a stretch. To describe your eyesight as "great" you'd need 20/20 or even 20/15 imo.

I also wear glasses. For most cases I don't really need to wear them, however I cannot read small text too far away or writing on a whiteboard, so in those cases I need to have glasses. It's like a thing of duality, for general purposes my eyesight is okay but for those things and more I need them.

lucky you, everything past ~1 foot away is a blur without mine. and i'm currently overdue for a checkup and a new pair as things are now getting slightly blurry even when i AM wearing this pair.

Near Sightedness: great for reading but crap for everything else past a certain distance.

i can see well enough to get around without glasses but that's about it unless i have my face seemingly glued to something to see it clearly.

Eye doc said I am slightly farsighted but I can see and function just fine without glasses. You don't have to have super terrible eyesight to have glasses. Some peeps just need them for certain things, like reading fine print up close.

I have characters with less-than-stellar eyesight as well as other disabilities. Something might be fantasy, but having a story that's only flawless characters is really goddamn boring.

To a lot of people, their characters are supposed to be like people, not just generic cartoon characters from saturday morning tv shows.

Updated by anonymous

Vision problems or no, there's also a glasses fetish. Even without it being a fetish, a lot of people just like how they look and this factors into their choice of glasses vs contacts or even surgery. If someone likes how they look with glasses why wouldn't their fantasy version include them? Same thing with fat characters- if someone doesn't see their weight as something that needs correction, why should they feel pressured to draw their character at a lower weight? It's their fantasy, their ideal, their image, not yours.

Unintentionally leaving them on a cliff hanger of something to the effect
of "Talk to you tomorrow dood" for that time. Slowly building that thought of "Why havn't you gotten back to them yet?!" in my head to the point I just feel crushed by it and not able to talk to them for even longer; Just adding up to the whole- Blarph =P

When all~ of that could have been avoided if I just said 'hi' instead of not and going through a mini version of this single time that happens T T)

I usually make my characters with realistic flaws to keep them believable and relatable. If it's perfect, then it's boring, and boring makes people say the eight worst words any author can hear: "I don't care what happens to these people." If the flaws work into the story and make it interesting, then the characters become something more than just an object of escape. Besides, without failure and flaws, growth does not exist, and success is meaningless.

Though doesn't it bother you to not talk to a peep like that? I mean sure it's not like you stop talking to your mother or anything but it really does bug me a lot to leave someone hanging like that because it feels like I'm letting them down in a way. =T

Dood's got a point. Without flaws like needing glasses to see the world around them or something personality wise that could cause some friction later down the road; Your characters at risk of being called one of the worst things one can call a character

"A Mary Sue"

Mary sue's are pretty much those perfect snowballs of a character that are so over powered ether ability wise with them pretty much being able to do anything ever with absolutely no draw back or Personality wise where everyone loves them and they can do no wrong. (Most times both) These are generally avoided because there's just no story with characters like that. Stories have conflict, adversity and drama but with a mary sue all that is meaningless because the Sue can solve everything ever in a flick of the wrist. The "Story" at that point would just turn into a power fantasy for the writer/ stereotypical fan-fic dood =P

How did this veer towards building characters? If you're doing a 1 to 1 copy of yourself, just adding a few furry features here and there, you aren't building anything...it takes hardly any thought...you're just copying yourself. That's what's cringy to me. If you're going to have a character that's YOUR character then make it interesting by, uh, not just making it another nerd with glasses who loves gaming, reading, cats, cuddling, etc. That's been done 100 times over. Furries with glasses are by and large NOT interesting, they're just a cliche at this point.

That's what makes me say "I don't care what happens to these people" when I realize that a character is literally just a 1 to 1 translation of an average, boring person. And this is where you say "oh, so you're saying you're not average and boring?" Not at all, I'm average as fuck, but you also don't see me making a character out of myself.

I take it you also find it cringy when people do this in video games? People trying to play as a near-exact replica of themselves is not uncommon.

So? There's no law anywhere that says characters must be interesting or radically different from the person who created them. If a character creator wants to make a boring mundane fiction version of themselves, then that's their choice. If I were you, I'd be more worried about the ridiculously overdone special snowflakey ones than the mundane bespectacled ones.

...That's generally what a fursona is-- yourself, but as an anthro.

When people try to make fursonas based on their fantasies, that are nothing like how they actually are? That, to me, is cringey.

Updated by anonymous

Here's my thoughts on this matter of what a fursona/character should be:

Everyone has different tastes and different people want different things from their fursonas, some might want theirs to merely be themselves in anthro form while others might want theirs to be completely different from them and if you ask me, either one is perfectly fine.
My own fursona is a combination of both of these, she's like me in some ways and different in others. Unlike me, she's an adventurer who travels to exotic regions and ventures into the ruins of long forgotten civilizations and she's also a pyrokinetic(overdone, I know). But like me, she's fairly laid-back carefree and enjoys living on her own terms, good-natured for the most part but with a short temper at times, usually solitary but cares for others.
My fursona is an escapist fantasy for the most part but there is some degree of realism, the reason I went this route is because I intended for her to be a different me who lives a different life in a different world. This is what I chose to do with my 'sona and other people should do whatever they choose do with theirs and wether they want to keep things simple or go all out is up to them because as I said earlier, different people want different things from their fursonas.

On topic: People who say "git gud" make me cringe the most.

It's not a law, but if you want people to maybe enjoy the art you create or commission then yeah, maybe try to make the characters interesting. And you could say "well, maybe they make that art for their own enjoyment, and not the enjoyment of others" which is rubbish. If they wanted it solely for their own enjoyment then they wouldn't bother posting it online.

I'm not saying make yourself a furry greek god, I'm saying I just don't really understand the point of copying yourself 1 to 1. Where does that "rule" end? Does this furry copy have to only engage in activities you already engage in irl? I thought the entire point of a fursona is the fantasy of it. Like your fursona is going to go places and do things that you can't. Do you find that part of it cringy as well? If so this whole thing is all starting to sound very boring...I'm glad I don't engage in it.

Because no one has ever uploaded artwork of their characters to demonstrate their drawing skills for commissions, to preserve their artwork using an online service or because they just felt like it, right? Not everyone does things the same way you do, mate.

If they're not like me and not doing the things I do, they're not a fursona, they're another character. I already have plenty of those, who deal with their own flaws in their own flawed world in their own canon separate from true reality.

I don't need or want to live vicariously through something that's just meant to be me except as an animalperson doing the things I already do. I see the both of these as entirely separate things.

I remember when white people looking and acting like stereotypical black people were called wiggers. For some reason, people seem to think a name change makes it more acceptable to pretend to be something they're not.

And about glasses. I think they make some people look better, if they are even trying to pick a pair of glasses that suits them of course. But it's really just taste and preference, you are free to not like how glasses or certain characters look.

Getting back to the OP, one of the things (and it's a long list, but I don't have all night :P ) that make me cringe and/or facepalm is a lot of people on the internet acting like creators are obligated to allow their work to be posted everywhere without getting any input in the matter, otherwise they're some kind of Bad Person(tm). Some of the posts in the Palcomix thread elsewhere on the forum are recent examples, but far from the only ones.

People who are huge, pretentious and overly confident dicks to others but as soon as someone calls them out on it they want to act like a victim. I went to school with someone like that who would constantly call people "fucking morons" and act high and mighty, and he legit cried and ran out of the room when some dude who was done with his shit went off on him. I think he may have been on the spectrum or had another mental issue so I felt a little bad, but still it was one of the cringiest thing I had ever seen in my life.

well, i tried some pineapple chunks today which wound up being WAY too bitter to eat (that was worse than a lemon) and some apple flavored soda...which i won't be getting again. dunno why i thought that 2 litre apple drink would be good. i mean, it kinda tastes like an apple but at the same time it doesn't which leads to a pretty bad end result. :/ overall, won't be trying either again. well, no pineapple chunks plain.

seriously, wtf were those so darn bitter? i've had things with pineapple as an ingredient before but nothing anywhere near as bitter as this was.

as for the apple stuff... whatever that is, it's not good at all. Apple Manzana is what it's called.

edit: ok, so apparently this weird apple soda has another name as well: Barillito Apple

Barillito Manzana when you piece things together and that translate to... "Keg Apple" in english.

not only does it taste weird but that's one of the strangest names for a soda that i've ever heard of. oh and that's spanish btw.

i know i tend to double post a good bit in a few threads but...i do at least keep it relevant to the topic...

that said... YOUTUBE TV - EPIC FAIL

note the following comparison of service quality:

youtube: i can watch videos that load at a relatively decent speed only at 144P - 240P

netflix: i can stream entire episodes and movies in HD with little trouble at all.

lol why would anyone want to use youtube of all places for tv?

looks like there might be an exodus of content creators from youtube to other services that actually give a F about content creators. of course, it was always bound to boil down to this once google bought youtube. >.> money money money...always money... well, looks like youtube cares very little for those who made it what it is and once said people leave...goodbye youtube and hello whatever replaces it.

Oh cool, a reason not to use a service I've never heard of before now.

Depending on the situation and the tone I can find someone saying "bro" really cringy.

Some people use bro the same way other people use words like mate, pal, homie, comrade, etc.

Anti-Furries

I have yet to meet an anti-furry that isn't an ignorant braindead egdelord.
I find it cringy how they're trying to act all badass by using memes and trying to scare us with their dark, violent, edgy texts about killing and torturing.

*cough* 9gag *cough*

I mean...threatening of any kind over the internet is pretty cringy in any context.

Why does everyone hate 9gag? Where are you seeing these horrible anti-furry memes on there? You gotta stop browsing the "fresh" section. I see a lot of highly upvoted furry content on there. So even though someone is always commenting "fucking furries!" you know there is still a large contingent of furries on the platform.

Because it puts a watermark on stolen content. I'm not against rehosting, but putting a watermark on rehosted content is fucking bullshit, and the original source is rarely if ever acknowledged.

Also the community is shit, but it's a large website so what else is new

have i ever told you about our 3 dogs we have here? 3 pets that is.

But horse meat isn't that bad. I only tried it once, so I don't remember the taste, but people eat horses and there's nothing wrong with that. Unless you were talking about something else here.

And why is it so bad to eat whale who is killed humanly under a quota?

Depends. Does that quota include "research"?

well most whale species are endangered so its pretty obvious why killing those for eating is bad no matter how humanely its done but idk about the few species that are not endangered

think of it like this: we have 3 dogs here as pets so naturally, the thought of eating dog meat would be sickening at the very least.

it's kinda like that when you think of how some people might also have a horse as a pet. would you really be willing to eat one of an animal you've had as a pet for years?

People have cattle and pigs as pets. Are you going to stop eating beef and pork now?
