Topic: PSA: How to add new artist/character/species tags

Posted under Tag/Wiki Projects and Questions

Are you trying to tag yourself as the artist and are wondering why artist:, character:, species: and similar are no longer working? Well, it's because we disabled that thanks to constant abuse.

In order to tag yourself or your characters you now have to add the tag as a "normal" tag to a submission you want, then change the tag type by editing the tag itself in the Tags page.
Sounds complicated? It's quite simple:

Step by Step:

1.) Create the tag you want to use and add it to your submission
2.) Click "Tags" at the very top of the page
3.) Insert the tag you want to change into the search field and click search
4.) Click "Edit" besides the tag
5.) Select the category that's appropriate from the drop down menu
6.) Save the change
Optional:
7.) Bask in your accomplishment

Repeat steps 3 to 6 for any tag you want to change. Be sure to not change the categories all willy nilly if the tag already existed beforehand.

If you encounter that a name for a tag has already been taken simply make your own by appending either what it is in parentheses, or the name of the owner / franchise it belongs to.

For theoretical examples:

paralee

- we'll pretend this tag already exists and that it's currently a character tag

Good things to make another unique tag might be:

paralee_(notmenotyou)

- in case there's more than one character with that name, adding the owner would help distinguish them
paralee_helllord - if there is a known surname, adding that might be enough to make it unique
paralee_(world_of_warcraft) - if the character were canon to that franchise this suffix might also be good to add, but it's not here because she's a fan character

I want to create a character tag for my best friend's main character, because she appears a lot in my artworks that I'm going to upload soon. Her name is Kyera. She goes by that name everywhere.

But there is apparently another character called Kyera and she already has the "kyera" tag. So what would be the proper naming convention in this case to create a tag for my friend's character?

I think the usual convention for conflicting names is to append the name of the character's owner.
So you'd use the tag "kyera_(friendname)"

Updated by anonymous

Donteven's advice is correct, just append your friend's name in parentheses and it'll be perfectly separate.

But her name is Kyera. That's how she is known virtually everywhere. So that would be "kyera_(kyera)".

You imply that there is something wrong with that, but that's a rather common occurrence. It's better to have a suffix than to conflict with another tag, so using kyera_(kyera) would be the better alternative.

Alright, thanks for the advice. I'll also ask her if she prefers that, or would rather use an extended form of her name, like on websites that force you to have two names (That's how I became Storm Engineer too, LOL, used to be just Storm).

I noticed a problem.

Searching does not seem to work at all for the (owner) format.

I have a character called Sakura, who got the tag "sakura_(storm_engineer)" - see the artwork that is my avatar. But if you search for just "sakura", there will be two pages of results and this picture won't be among them.

So if people who know my friend Kyera search for her by searching "kyera", there will be no relevant results.

Suggestion: I think search should be able to break up tags consisting of multiple words using _ as separator (and ignoring spec characters like brackets) and partial match these words.

Updated by anonymous

That suggestion would wreak havoc on searches where people might try to find only a specific character by that name. If you want to use a wildcard search you will have to specify said wildcard. In this case you'd search for kyera*, and then all tags containing kyera at the start of the tag will be shown.

When there are two or more characters with the same name, logically they should all be a valid hit when searching for that name. But currently the naming is inconsistent, some characters use NAME_(character), others use NAME_(OWNER) and yet others simply get to own just NAME. In the first two cases search will come up empty, and in the latter case the lucky character with just NAME, and only that character will show up.

This is highly inconsistent. And not every user knows how to use wildcard searches, or thinks about using it when they get no results as it's a bit counter-intuitive.

I tested this with my Sakura character and it doesn't work. Neither is the artwork showing up in the results for sakura*, nor is the existing tag sakura_(storm_engineer) showing up on the left.

Even more interestingly if I search for sakura_(s* the tag shows up on the left but there will be no image results.

They really shouldn't all show up under the same tag because otherwise it'd be impossible to only find a specific character and not possibly dozens of different ones. The inconsistencies when more than one character with the same name exists is due to the issue that characters can be owned or belong to different things.
If we use character owner in the parentheses how do we deal with characters owned by companies? How do we deal with multiple distinct characters with the same names in different franchises of the same owner? An example would be Biggs & Wedge and Cid in the Final Fantasy series and spin-offs. Those are recurring, distinct character names given to entirely different looking "people" in many, many titles.

As a solution we're trying to put in parentheses the thing that's mostly relevant to that particular character.

That's an interesting bug. I can confirm I am seeing the same behavior, except for the last search that does show me results. If this doesn't get fixed with the new site update we'll be having a deeper look into this, and fix it then.

This is one of the reasons why I wanted this change to push trough in general, so that people using the site would be aware of Tags page exsisting.

Because if you know there's character steve, then you can first search for all the character tags which start with steve and then proceed to use the correct tag with searching:
https://e621.net/tag?name=steve_*&type=4&order=count

Altough I kinda also like the idea of going forward of dum-proofing the search by making first names an umbrella terms, but this would at the same time make users accustomed of tagging their steve character with steve only and require more cleanup than previously was needed and worst case scenario will cause delays with takedowns when one steve character is doing takedown and everything is under steve only.

Also the beta site will have tag suggestions when you are in process of writing the tag, so this nullifies the problems a lot as writing steve will just give you list of most tagged tags with steve beginning.

Updated by anonymous

It's definitely a complicated issue with no straightforward solution.

Using the owner or franchise in parentheses makes sense. But maybe for consistency it would be beneficial to enforce the parenthesis format? That is, every character type tag would have to have their franchise, owner or origin (eg "mythology" for mythological characters) respectively. This would eliminate the anomaly of some character getting to own the parentheses-less version of the name while others don't.

Then to solve the issue of people searching for just names, be that either type of character, what if we say that the search matches for the part before the parenthesis if the search term itself has no parenthesis? So people still need to name their steve with the owner in parentheses but searching just steve would find it.

So eg. steve would match steve_(bob) and steve(joe) but steve(b* or steve(bob) would only match steve(bob).

With these two steps combined, people who searched for eg. anubis in the past for art with the god/species based on the god would still find the same art, but this search would also include eg. anubis (neopets) and anubis (artist) as well as any Anubis named character, and people could then pick the respective character tag to narrow.

Now I have results for sakura_(s* as well, and my respective piece is there too. Weird, because when I write that post I checked several times and it didn't work.

I... Have no idea where to post this question, but why is there no lioness tag?

jakew said:
I... Have no idea where to post this question, but why is there no lioness tag?

Because of the complexity associated with having the base species tag like "lion" and then 2 more tags for "male lion" and "female lion", and that for every single species in existence.
And not to mention species that have more than one possible term for either gender, or overlap of words where things like "buck" are used for multiple species.
As such we simply decided to trim the fat and have people use "species sex" in a search. With up to 40 tags that can be searched you're unlikely to run out of space.

This got kinda derailed, but I have a question: Now that the submission form has dedicated (if probably cosmetic) sub-fields for entering characters and artists, would it be possible to program it so that any new tag entered in either of those fields is automatically registered as that type? Similar to how, on most boorus, you can just preface a new tag with "char:" or "art:" to make that happen?

I played with this idea, but it tends to make the site throw warnings about trying to change tag types when doing mundane things or if you make a typo. I wanted to avoid confusion that you simply couldn't change the tag type because trying to tag it gives a warning. I also wanted to avoid giving too much special meaning to the fields, as then it becomes a bigger issue of where each tag needs to go. I also didn't want to discourage people with a big list of warnings for following the tagging checklist on the uploader, which is closer to what the fields are there for. Instead I let the question of "It's in the wrong spot, how do I change it?" come up, because then people look for information about how to do it. I'm not sure which wins in the end for being less intuitive.

I tried creating a Character tag on my post, but it just shiwed up amongst the normal tags despite me placing it into the "Character" tag section. Anything I may be doing wrong?

The first post in this very thread holds the answer you seek.

What's the rule for characters that are clearly recurring but we have no authoritative source for a name? Looking at post #2402965, post #2426899, and post #2446562, I want to create unnamed_farm_raider_(hexteknik) and unnamed_farm_dog_(hexteknik), but I have no idea if that's consistent with the rules. Ideally, there would be a way to simply edit the tag in the future if we actually get names for these characters, rather than going back and editing each post.

"Unnamed" does not seem necessary to me, just put those down as farm_dog_(hexteknik), etc.
If these characters do get named in the future, just create an alias request from the old name to the new one.

This forum is massive, and I don't really know how to use forums anyways, so please bear with me...

There are a couple of pics I want to add a character tag to, but I didn't post the picture, I'm not the artist, and I have no idea how to add a tag. I've tried to figure it out, but it's either not very intuitive or I'm a moron.

Would someone please show me how to add/suggest a new tag for an image? There's a few untagged pictures of Cherrikissu's character Rebel that nobody has tagged and I want to help.

@DBCooperSkyPirate scroll down until you see the "Edit" button (just below the "Favorite" button on the left side of the screen). Click it and a yellow box full of tags will appear. Write rebel_(cherrikissu) in the yellow box and click "Submit".

Thank you very much. The interface on this site isn't very intuitive, less so on my phone.

I appreciate being able to properly tag pictures now. There have been a couple of Rebel that weren't tagged.

On that subject, one I remember seeing was done by Nasusbot. When I try and search the artist, it offers the auto fill, along with a number next to it showing the artist has a couple hundred pics. But when I complete the search, it gives me the chickens response. Do you know what is going on?

Thank you again.

The artist is probably DNP (Do Not Post), meaning that they do not want their art here anymore. Whatever was posted before has probably been deleted. You can check by writing "status:any" in the search bar. For example: nasusbot status:any

Thank you again.

I'm glad that I could help!

It doesn't appear that nasusbot is on DNP. The "status:any" search result looks fine, there's just no thumbnails. But it still lets me "scroll" through pages. I'm assuming something like "DNP" would be in the tags? There's nothing to indicate a DNP, anyway.

There normally should be an avoid_posting tag implicated by the artist tag in this situation. Apparently most if not all deleted nasusbot posts were taken down by the artist's request. See here.

Thank you again. I was assuming there should have been some kind of indication that they were DNP, and it's good to know that's not always the case.

You're awesome and I really appreciate your time and help.

The best way to check if an artist is on the DNP list is to check the avoid_posting page. That list is always up to date, while the implications might not be.

It sucks that the character tag can no longer be used. It made things so much more readable and easier, but I did read the first post in this thread. I must point out that the Edit option is hitting behind the hamburger menu icon at the top of the page. In the instructions I believed the edit button referred to the edit by the tags under a post. I would change the instructions in the first post to the following,

Step by Step:
1.) Create the tag you want to use and add it to your submission
2.) Click "Tags" at the very top of the page (hidden under the hamburger menu icon https://e621.net/tags )
3.) Insert the tag you want to change into the search field and click search
4.) Click "Edit" besides the tag
5.) Select the category that's appropriate from the drop down menu

Some artists use different names for NSFW and for SFW work and don't like to link them together. In scenarios like this, are we able to use two different artist tags for the corresponding art?

Yes. Though if there's clear evidence of the two names being the same person (e.g. they explicitly mention it in their profiles), they may get aliased, but that wouldn't affect how you tag it. You can just let the system deal with it in that case.

How do you edit a character tags wiki? I've been trying to find a way to do it but no such luck has occured to me.

Go to the wiki page you wish to edit and hit the hamburger button (three horizontal lines on top of each other) at the top of the page, in the menu that opens up there is an "Edit" option, after you make your edits hit the "Submit" button. That's also the way to edit the wiki for any type of tag, not just character tags.

Thanks man, I was so confused earlier

No, a writer does not get credited as an artist unless they had actively participated in the creation of the artwork (not the story).
That also includes artistic inspirations (e.g., drawing a parody of the Mona Lisa), art advisors, translators, commissioners, character owners, etc.
Exceptions are those who had a hand in the creation, such as (major) editors, sound editors, 3D model creators, animators, etc.

It would be worth crediting the writers in the description instead, such as the case for some story_in_description posts.

I'm kind of new to the site and never really made an account since I only went on here to look at the fanart (the safe art not the 18+ art) and don't know how to add an artist tag

You can create new tags in the category you want by adding in the artist:, character:, species:, or copyright: prefix before the tag. E.g., artist:thegamerpainter.
If the tag has already been created (by adding it first directly without a prefix), then you need to refer to the first comment of this thread (i.e., forum #283267).

On a side note, if you are trying to tag yourself as the artist for post #3220878, it would not be accurate as you had only cropped it and did not create the original artwork.
It is also very likely that the post will be deleted since it violates the uploading guidelines (see Screen captures & Edits). Uploading cropped artwork specifically for use as profile pictures is frowned upon here.

That was just a profile picture post, I credit the original artist.

Regardless of whether or not you had credited the original artist, we don't allow third-party crops or screen-captures of another artist's work.
Exceptions are only made if the artwork is specifically cropped or captured by the artists themselves, see cropped & screencap.

Since you have no post changes on record, we can only presume that you are just dumb. Otherwise, actual details on what you attempted to do will be required if you want advice.

if you're adding a tag that does not currently exist on e621 to a post click the "Edit" button below a post and add <category>:<tag> and it will add the new tag with given category
if you want to modify an existing tag, go to that tag's wiki page and press the "Edit Tag" button near the top of the page and select the correct category.

if a tag already exists and you're trying to use the <category>:<tag> method nothing will happen.

How do you create the tag though? I'm trying to add a new one to a post but it won't let me make one on the post

What are you trying to add to a post, and what error do you get when you try?

How do you correct a character tag? I own the art for the character Heko, but the tag has him listed as Hiko

You click the edit button, delete the incorrect name, and enter the correct one.

Unless there's hundreds of examples (this happens!), and then you just do an alias request. This also prevents someone from using the wrong spelling in the future!

Is there a way we can just like make a female feral specific tag? Cause it's been getting very hard to search for female feral only, and then like adapt to make other tags fit, like instead of just only having anthro_on_feral it could also have anthro_on_female_feral you know?

I think you could just search "anthro_on_feral female_on_anthro", it yields around 1.5k results.

And I think this question would be better off for as a new forum topic, or inside topic #23085

Having an impossibly hard time creating a tag for an artist; there is no 'tags' option at the top
I thought it might be the 'tags/desc' in the history section on the side of the post but that didn't lead me to any tag-editing options either

CRTL+F "Tags". It would be impossible to miss it since it is on the top navbar alongside "Account", "Posts", "Comments", and even "Forum" since you managed to navigate here.

If you still can't find it, here is the link.

Alternatively, there is an easier way:
1) Just go to the post you have added the "artist tag" in.
2) Check the list of tags on the left until you find your tag, and click on the "?" right next to it.
3) On the very top of the page, under the navbar, click on "Edit Tag".
4) Change the tag category to "Artist" and submit.

Okay so after I opened this page on one tab I apparently didn't scroll QUITE to the top on the other and stopped where the 'listing' option is
So sorry for being dumb-

So I have a question about a few digimon related tags. I found a post that included a sistermon_blanc in it, that tag kinda didn't exist so i made it and my understanding is that digimon are "species," even though much like angemon(s) the sistermon(s) look just like normal humans so i made it a species. I'm pretty sure that's all fine and good.

When i was investigating this however i noticed a tag for sistermon which could be just an implication thing as there are 3 different sistermon though depending on how technical you want to get there is no "base" sistermon and ciel/noir are evolutionary upgrades rather than them being alternate forms of say agumon.

I also noticed 2 tags for a sistermonblanc_(character) and a sistermonnoir_(character) that share the same 2 posts, with both of those sistermon in said images, but if sistermon are supposed to be species they should be species tags, which would then make the (character) on the end of the tag not right. I don't really see anything that makes these sistermon to be oc's and the images are made by different artists, though that by itself doesn't really matter.

I feel like there should be a species tag for the different sistermon instead of the character tags, but i don't want to just go remove these tags because idk if this is a character, even though i don't think it is. I already made a species tag for blanc should i make one for noir and add both to these pictures? do i leave the character tags alone? would it be better to change the character tags to species tags and then submit an alias request to change the tag name to better reflect the species? what about the sistermon tag itself, is that fine as is?

there was already a sistermon_ciel tag and that all seems fine.

is this even furry enough for this website

Hello! I want to add tag FixFox. Why? Because many people don't know about this game [FixFox].

I have went ahead and created the tags for you on post #3773573.
Next time, just follow the first comment of this thread if you want to create new tags.

I used a base where the base’s author has no clear rules on online posting. How should my upload be tagged?

It shouldn't.

Bad Things to Upload:

  • Bases not coloured by the creator of the base

Hmm, does this include coloring line art as pencil-artist's inker? I know that some people still do that separately, as in, by two different artists, much like a lot of old comic books are known for. I guess a lot of that was down to the technology of 4-color process being a pain all on it's own? XD

Hi, everyone. I'm a long time lurker who's just now thinking about posting my own artwork to the site, but I'm pretty confused as to how to go about it. I have a lot of questions, so bear with me.

For starters, I want to post my art under an artist name that doesn't match my username. However, I'd like to keep this account the same so I can still lurk. Would I have to make a new account with the desired name in order to link it to the artist name, or can I do so with this pseudonym without making a new account? Can I list munchmallow-frosty as a pseudonym on the artist page that I want to make? Am I allowed to have more than one account on e6 at all? The name that I want to use doesn't have a social media presence. If I make a new artist thing, do I just leave the URL field empty, or do I have to put something there?

I'm pretty badly stumped as to how to go about this whole thing, so any help would be appreciated.

Disclaimer: I don't work for or volunteer for e621; I'm not a moderator/administrator/staff critter.

You don't have to make a new e621 account to do this. It's possible for you to log in as munchmallow-frosty , upload your own art, and tag it with your desired artist name.

The very first time you add your desired artist name as a tag, it will come out as a "regular" tag (white, in with all the other tags) and not an "artist" tag (yellow, at the top of the tag list). You can follow the steps in this thread to edit the tag type so it becomes an "artist" tag.

You can also create an artist page for your desired name, using your munchmallow-frosty account. Once you have the artist tag set up, you can try to go to the artist page for it, by clicking the ? link next to the artist tag on the image. You will get a page that says something like "No artist page", and has a link that will create the artist page. Click that link and put what you want on the new artist page.

My understanding is that you can, BUT, don't use it to cheat on votes and favorites. In other words, if you have accounts as both munchmallow-frosty and CoolArtist1, you upload some new artwork under your CoolArtist1 account, you log out, log back in as munchmallow-frosty, and upvote or favorite the art you just posted... you'll get busted.

I'm pretty sure you can leave it empty.

Thank you! This will help a lot. :)

You imply that there is something wrong with that, but that's a rather common occurrence. It's better to have a suffix than to conflict with another tag, so using kyera_(kyera) would be the better alternative.

Umm...do you or anyone else know how to add your username As a tag? Like in Artists tag? Because when I post and put my username in artist, but it goes down to tags!

The steps are outlined in the first message in this forum

No, a writer does not get credited as an artist unless they had actively participated in the creation of the artwork (not the story).
That also includes artistic inspirations (e.g., drawing a parody of the Mona Lisa), art advisors, translators, commissioners, character owners, etc.
Exceptions are those who had a hand in the creation, such as (major) editors, sound editors, 3D model creators, animators, etc.

It would be worth crediting the writers in the description instead, such as the case for some story_in_description posts.

Thanks for the reply.
Follow-up question, what if a writer's story is included as part of the artwork?? Example:

edit: in other words, story (by tempo321) included in the artwork ... so should that artwork also be tagged with tempo321 tag?
(source says art done by Nyaasu)

I believe that this should be put into the post's description and not tagged, this is the same method used to credit voice artists and other non-visual contributors.

although, in this case the author is already hard credited in the bottom left of the image, so I'm not sure if that'd be necessary.

What category should William Morris be in? The background of a pic I commissioned is a Morris pattern, so I made a tag for him. However I am unsure of which category would be better, I have him set as an artist right now, but I'm wondering if perhaps it should be copyright because of how well known and commercially present his designs are. For reference this is the William Morris I'm referring to: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Morris
