Topic: Feature Suggestion Suggestion

Posted under General

EDIT: THIS TOPIC IS NOT OPEN ANY LONGER. E621 DOES NOT ACCEPT MONEY FOR ANY REASON, AND HAS NOT SINCE THE CHANGE IN ADMINISTRATION NEARLY A YEAR AGO. THIS THREAD IS OLD AND IS HERE FOR HISTORICAL PURPOSES. PLEASE DO NOT COMMENT, SUGGEST, OR BUMP IN THIS THREAD. SUGGESTIONS WILL BE IGNORED HERE. PLEASE GO TO forum #14855 FOR THE CURRENT SUGGESTION THREAD. DO READ THE FIRST POST AND THE ENTIRE THREAD BEFORE ADDING A COMMENT TO THAT FORUM THREAD. THANK YOU. *END EDIT*

How would people feel about something wherein you could suggest a feature that you would love to see e621 have and we do the following:

We work out how long it'd take to add it in and how it might affect costs.

We put a dollar figure on the feature.

People then donation to features they like and when it hits the magic number, we work on the feature and add it.

How do people feel about this?

Updated by ippiki ookami

Okay, a feature to hide the HUGE list of stickies would be nice.

Updated by anonymous

It's nice that you're not fully denying suggestions. I'd like to know what other people think should be added to the site.

Updated by anonymous

Sounds cool, open-minded, and gets money for the site.

honestly, the only /major/ issue I've ever had is the site is a bit too simple in it's structure... can't tell links from non links.

Keep in mind that once you establish an implicit agreement to develop features in exchange of donations, the rules change.

As of now, the site is given to us as is, with no counterpart asked from us (save for not using adblockers) and complaining about things not working, features not being added, or other stuff, has little to no legitimity.

If you accept money to develop features, there will be people asking the state of advancement of the said development (and other people who will press the query), or complain about a feature not working the way they wanted...
You're better be sure of the feasability of what you agree to implement.

I'm neither for nor against it. There are really things i would like to see changed or fixed, but not at the price of...drama.

DUN DUN DUN
Add a button that when I click it a little dude zooms across the screen with a cape and gives me a kickin' rad thumbs-up.

Updated by anonymous

Sounds like an interesting idea. I just can't think of anything new I'd want to add to this site. :) Except maybe more tag implications so I don't have to learn after the fact that artists like Ajna used to be named Ladykix, and I should be tagging images under the old name instead of the new one.

Updated by anonymous

I love this site, but unfortunately e621 is below charity, disaster relief, and things-I-don't-do-in-total-secrecy on the list of things I donate to.

If anything, I would rather suggest features to *remove* in order to keep the site cheap and running on ad revenue alone.

For me, what makes this site great is the quality and quantity of uploads, the ability to tag and search tags freely, the ability to favorite posts, and the excellent Cooliris compatibility. Those and those alone are the core things that keep me coming back, and whatever will keep those things available for free without bankrupting the site is fine with me.

Updated by anonymous

souds like a good idea, however getting ht donations may be a problem, but if it's cumulative, it should EVENTUALLY work

Updated by anonymous

I love this site so much :3 There's not much I'd want to change, but I would really like a feature that lets you browse through all the past comments you've made.

I'm sorry, but no. That would add ridiculous overhead to the system.

Plus, commenting is just a addition. It is NOT the primary focus of this site. Tracking comments per user in this fashion would require adding a new section, it'd add a lot of overhead with regards to caching (seeing as we have over 10k users), more complexity to the database..

Updated by anonymous

ooohh.. oohh.. and a page that lists the site rules :)

Updated by anonymous

You will make a best faith effort to upload only high quality images.

oh if only

I try!
BTW, I noticed the "bestiality" rule doesn't seem to be enforced much anymore (not that I'm complaining)...

Updated by anonymous

"High quality" in this case means few or no compression artifacts, decent image size, uncropped, etc., not "good art". And the bestiality thing only applies to real photos/movies, not drawn art.

There, updated the default wiki help page with expanded and clarified 'rules' and contact email here:

http://www.e621.net/wiki/show?title=help%3Ahome

That was an easy one.

EDIT: Also, did a complete run through on all outstanding posts, deletion requests, aliases, implications, and forum stickies. Spring cleaning bonanza - you can all thank me later.

*looks at watch*
wait for it...
wait for it...
thanks mellis!! -.-

Updated by anonymous

YAY! I know most of the rules, but with this.. at least people won't have the "I didn't know" excuse :)

Updated by anonymous

Okay.

We'll be bringing in the feature suggestion feature as part of 2.2. :)

Updated by anonymous

Maybe we could get a dupe detector to drastically cut down on reposts.

Updated by anonymous

I thought images were already checked for dupe crc32 hashes.

Updated by anonymous

If you alter the image, it changes it or something.

Updated by anonymous

Ultima_Weapon said:

it exists but it requires a complex algorithm which could greatly increase the server support.

crc32 hash system is sufficient.

Updated by anonymous

The hash dupe detector only works if the two files being compared are bit-for-bit exactly the same, which includes metadata and image format and everything. Doesn't work all of the time but anything more complex would be a big server drain.

- Option: Flag for resize!
Useful for images, or high resolution has no interest (exemple: http://e621.net/post/show/80885/)
The downsizing will be final, the targeted files take less space on the server.

That image is fine, many people prefer higher resolution images and there is a setting to automatically resize images if you don't prefer it.

Updated by anonymous

- There should be an option booster is available for those who upload a file.
The option would be available some time before disappearing.
This would allow the uploader to solve his own mistakes (repost, wrong upload ect ect)

Updated by anonymous

Here's an idea, maybe either a URL addition (such as http://e621./net/lite/) or a setting in your account options to run the site in lite mode, disabling most data retrieval such as tag numbers, favorite list, comments, score, maybe even the tag list for each image since I don't really use it (however, that may cause tag additions/fixes to go down, which is not desirable). This could remove however much load those features cost on the servers, and make the site cleaner/faster to load.

Updated by anonymous

<b>Two features</b>
When a user search contains an artists name a little to appear at the top of the page (in the status-notice bar). Also if they are on the DNP list.

The DNP measure could also be implemented by posting a picture with the words "do not post this artists work!" and then tagging it with all the DNP artists. Anyone who searches the artists name would see the thumbnail.

Updated by anonymous

Some ...ahem... users don't even tag their images, you want them to make a tag search before upload?

Jazz said:

I said nothing about MAKING them search before they post. It may stop people from browsing and then noticing that there isn't any sexyfur pics and having the bright idea to upload the missing pics.

Updated by anonymous

how about making the blacklist work with pools? thinking about other users in this suggestion because i personally don't mind, but there are people on this site that instead of going to another picture, they decide to comment on it and complain about it.

My suggestion : make it so new users have to wait 15 days before they can actually post on the forum.
That would spare us of the recurrent ban evading drama whores.
That would also prevent any butthurt artist or commissioner to take their issue to the forum instead of mail/PMs.

I vote this one... also this on tag editing should slow accounts made for just tag/post abuse.

Also +1, at least for tagging. I'm not sure if posting should be included, or else you sign up for an account and have to wait 15 days before you get any of the major benefits of accounts. Maybe that's the point? :P

Updated by anonymous

Maybe a new account will have to wait a few hours to a day before they can post anything? It means they will have time to familiarise themselves with the site and hopefully find the DNP list so they will know to not post any art created by the artists on it. Maybe an automatic redirect after account activation?

If we are going that route, maybe having them post X many tag edits before being able to upload images. :) Would have them familiarized with how things are tagged here a bit better.

Updated by anonymous

Limitations like that will give us less bad, sure, but also less good. There are plenty of people willing to clean up poorly-tagged pictures and I'd rather be doing that myself than experience a decrease in the number of submissions.

Updated by anonymous

this is the place to post ideas so i am reposting mine from the other thread:

allow pools to have comments added to them as a whole

Updated by anonymous

I've got a tag editing script for e621 if anyone* is interested. It allows you to do one-click mass tag deletion and one-click tag mass editing
<div class="status-notice">*user must have at least some history with posts and edits</div>

Updated by anonymous

I am aware that the suggestion to view *all* past comments you've made has been nixed....

But.. when I few a random someone's profile, I can see the last 5 things They've uploaded, and favorited. Would it possible to have the site keep track of the last 5 or 10 (maybe even 25?) comments I've made? (or, even just comments made in the last week/two weeks/3 days...) I like commenting, and I like seeing what people have to say about my comments, but I hate faving bit of art just because I commented on it...

Alternatively, I could see some fun idea like being notified if someone replied to a comment you've made, but that, and other ideas that suggest a more complicated commenting system, are probably way more intensive then the first idea :)

I doubt this suggestion will ever happen, but I figured that the worse that could happen is I get scolded for bringing up an idea like an already discarded idea. :)

A random page button for post list, like the one on paheal.

Updated by anonymous

We won't have a super-complicated comment system because that's not what this site is for. This site is not a blog, or a twitter, or a forum.

And the reason you can see uploads and favorites is because that's the focus of this site.

THE ART.

MAOU IS YOUR HERO you better fucking respect.

FREE TO YOU THE USERS AT HOME changelog for site today:
- fixed issues with moderation panel. Moderating/deleting/approving posts will be faster with the new layout.
- fixed colour issues with mouseover/site notice banners
- fixed colour issues with wiki titles being inconsistent
- added blue text to denote unread forums topics
- added blue text to denote links in comments/wiki/forums
- standardized/replaced colours for child and deletion queue post borders, and for character/copyright tags
- changed 'pending' image border from ugly green to pleasant, soothing grey-blue

Largely this is colour-work prep for the new site that in the meantime, we can dump in to the existing one's CSS templates right now. So, enjoy.

<3 to the whole team, and I see from the IRC that youre already working on more changes for the next version. (2.2 right?) You guys are awesome.

Updated by anonymous

yes the graphics and layout for 2.2 is tenatively "locked in", and coding is well underway for the back end. Still no ETA but we are pushing forward. The new colour changes match those on the site upgrade (mostly) so expect more of the same old blue, orange and white you've grown to love and/or hate.

ok, so it's not just steam browser messing with colors, i was tripping out here

Is it me or do the copyright and artist tags have the same colour?

Updated by anonymous

Cool, the new stuff looks great! Good job guys. And koekje xD

Updated by anonymous

Here are two other proposals:
- Majuscule for Artist, Character and Copyright.
Example: Mayra_Boyle, Dnk-Anais, Final_Fantasy...
To avoid certain pitfalls, should it be done automatically by a script.

- Do that the search engine tag falls below the case
(It is indifferent to between uppercase and lowercase)

Updated by anonymous

Just a note about the color changes; they don't seem to have been applied to the wiki's editing page preview function, although they <i>are</i> on the actual wiki pages. Same goes for the preview post feature in the forum.

Updated by anonymous

I want the vote down option removed from the dropdown menu :V

Updated by anonymous

I'd say remove voting entirely. It does nothing.

Updated by anonymous

Why? I doubt that the voting feature is that much of a strain on the site. And if the filthy, unwashed masses can't show their approval/dissaproval of a picture by voting, they'll just spam shitty comments on it like they do now, but worse.

Updated by anonymous

Hm. While I'm fine with the voting feature overall... I never really noticed before that voting up and down were in the available on-click commands when browsing posts.

To be honest, it doesn't make much sense for it to be there, since generally speaking you'd need to see more than the thumbnail would show you to determine whether it was worth voting up or down. Unless, of course, you were just voting based on general preferences like 'I like/don't like X subject', which defeats the point of voting (in my opinion anyways)...

One use for it would be to easily vote up all of your favorites, which you would probably want to do anyway. Or you could vote on an entire pool you like or dislike.

So is this thread officially a feature suggestion thread or should we wait until version 2.2?
