Feature suggestion...

Would it be possible to have an option that would let you see the number of tags an image has on the thumbnail page without having to click on it and load the actual image?

Would be useful for easily identifying images which are undertagged. Mouseover is nice and works, but it'd be really quick and at a glance if you could just have a number beside the thumbnail or something like that.

Also, An "order:tagcount" search parameter would be really cool to have at some point.

Any chance that the comment voting feature can be retooled? I think that showing a counter next to each comment (much like the picture voting from before the switch) instead of just hiding it would be more...interesting I guess.

I mean, if someone who is known to leave stupid comments has a -36 next to most of them, it might deter them from making more.

Updated by anonymous

Yeah, that makes it easier to find shitty commenters.

This sounds like something that should be easy enough to accomplish, but I can't promise anything just yet without running things by Varka and/or Nrr. And as I said, resolving bugs is coming first at the moment.

I'll add this to the list of feature requests though. It does sound like something that we should have.

NEW IDEA:

i think we should identify translators on this site, and give them some kind of privileged account, but call it a translators account.

"but, won't people just use google to make a crappy translation for reward?"

yes, but it will be a crappy translation, and people will complain, and said translator will not get the account.

How can the accuracy of the translations be verified? Suppose they just do google translate and then reword things as necessary to make the translation not sound so bad.

well, if someone uses google, and gives a good translation, then it doesn't matter. they had to work to translate. now if it says. "me am loving your hot parts" or something stupid, then they just copy pasting. if it runs smooth, then its all good.

Updated by anonymous

To me, this sounds like something already covered by concepts like Bat Week. If you're an outstanding contributor, you get recognized with an upgraded account because someone says "Man, Aurali rocks and deserves an upgraded account."

If someone on here really were a great translator, and not an off-and-on translator who also ocassionally makes questionable use of the notes system, I'm sure they'd be recognized as such.

ask and you shall have http://e621.net/wiki/show?title=tag_counter_greasemonkey_script

step 1: get greasemonkey
step 2: copy/pasta script into a new text file named anything.user.js
step 3: drag text file into browser
step 4: ???
step 5: eh, you get the picture

FYI if there is any significant interest in this script ill modify it to give a tag score based on how well pictures are tagged.

yes opera mini works with e621, I use it all the time
everything but the animations work

I've done that before.

I've also rewritten a translation for a translator who's English was bad in order to make it sound more natural in English (It was poetry. It's really hard to write poetry in another language.)

Updated by anonymous

I've got one; the sites missing the "under 18, go here" button in the home page. As stated here → http://e621.net/forum/show/9515 ←.

Cant a porn site get in some sort of lagal trouble if found ot for not having this?

Updated by anonymous

Does the accuracy of translations really matter? It's really hard to translate anything into another language even if fluent in both. if you think a translation sound cumbersome, do something about it. It it says 'me am loving your hot parts' Fix it. The thing is, then you reach the slipper slope of how much liberty to take? is it hot as in temperature? ("Oooh.. your cunt is so warm, I love it") is it hot as in sexy ("Oh baby, your cock is so sexy, I love it..") is it loving as in making love ("Oh... I'm fucking your hot pussy!") is it love like really like? ("God, your pussy's beautiful...") something else? maybe it's hot like spicy? :P what about the mood? In Japanese especially the words used make a lot of difference in how something is perceived.. the 8 year old polite shota boy who's being taken advantage of isn't going to be screaming about how he's fucking your hot cunt... he's more likely to be going on about how warm it is, etc.

also if we flagged people as translators, then those people would be hounded with statements of 'come translate my favorite porn!!' and any 'new' translators might be shy about translating because the're not labled as a translator, or someone might feel under appreciated, etc.

Riversyde said:

That would be hard as those things are normally build into the flash and I'm not sure that there's a simple way to just add on play/pause/progess bars on top of the flash. then some flash already have them and then you'd have two load boars and... yeah. doesn't seem plausible.

Riversyde said:

the progress bar thing for flash and gif are easy to do JavaScript can load files completely before displaying them. The play/pause thing however can't really be done for flash unless the author has built it in. Even flashes internal play/pause function doesn't work all that well.

The only way I know how to play/pause a gif is to split it into stills and control their sequence via javascript.

Its under "terms of service" on the main page. I'm not sure about the legalities (search for a long time, could find nothing) of this, but I'd sure feel a lot better if there was the old statement "Under 18? Go here" or something along those lines. Might as well make sure we can't get sued.

anyone else like to see who favorited an image? or is that just me .-. ._. .-.

Personally, I always enjoyed looking back at my uploads and seeing you favorited what i've uploaded... or at least how many did... gives me a better feel for what people like to see... S'alot easier to hit 'favorite' then it is to leave a comment.

Tag for picture titles.

E.g. post #97274 would be tagged
title:Size_Doesn't_Matter

Possible problem:
Many, many pictures have the same pseudo-clever titles, like "horseplay", "bound to please" or "got milk?"

Updated by anonymous

Tags for titles is just plain a bad idea. If the title is within the image, fine. If not, who cares all that much? The purpose of a title is to identify the work. Since the (image content based) tags are supposed to do that already (and there'd be no way of browsing by titles or easily displaying titles if they were just another tag), title tags would be basically useless.

Even if the titles were to be preserved in some form, tags would be the absolute worst way to go about it.

Updated by anonymous

If you want to share the title.... put it in a comment. :)

Suggestion: controlled tagging

Controlled tagging is when a catalog can only use predefined tags.

My idea is to allow new tags to exist for a month before being automatically deleted. To avoid auto deletion a mod/admin must approve the tag. All current tags would have to be approved because there is an ungodly amount of them. If a tag count reaches zero the tag comes up for automatic deletion again.

This should hopefully help to fix the current tag pile.

That sounds...alright, I guess. Lots of work on the mods, though, and there's not enough of them already.

The good thing is that it doesn't have to be! E621 already has all the tags it needs (abet artists and character names). The new-tag list would only one month long as anything longer just deletes itself.

if the mods feel overwhelmed just give the power to the privileged accounts. The hard part is coading the feature. If considered I could try and help with that.

Updated by anonymous

I don't think the way you suggested would work very well. It really works best the way it is currently IMHO (Or, well, the way it was pre-2.2 when aliasing worked)... The way you're suggesting would require people to initially go through all 50,000 tags used on the site, which they obviously don't have time to do -- so it'd probably end up with them skimming and approving / deleting by quantity, which would eliminate all of the low-count tags and still leave several things which should've been aliased.

Also, in the end, making only certain tags approved would be no better than not for getting people to tag right -- just as aliases don't seem to change how most tag (except by force), having only certain 'approved' tags would just result in people still using the wrong ones and images ending up missing a lot of tags a month later. I've seen people who've been on the site for months or even a year or more continuously use bad tags (not just 'not the right ones', but things like trying to use spaces in tag names, or not putting spaces before a type suffix, or using the wrong method to set tag type) just because they've never double-checked against something else on the site before tagging, or even checked the tag list to see if their tags worked after they set them. Deleting them a month later just makes it even less obvious to the user when they fuck up, meaning they're even less likely to improve.

[EDIT]
Essentially what I meant is that since people will inevitable and repeatedly fuck up (and keep doing it until they're told what they're doing wrong and how to do it right), the only methods that really work are force (because, face it, nobody seems to read documentation). So, basically, the only methods liable to work are either
A) having only a finite amount of choices, like SoFurry used to do, thus making the biggest fuck-up anyone can do being under-tagging, or
B) maintain a list of equivalents, such as the alias system here, that is brought into effect forcibly and immediately, and update as necessary.

Given that images are a nearly unbounded medium, and so the number of appropriate tags that may be needed for a database is theoretically infinite, obviously the first one doesn't work well at all (thus why they changed it at SF -- though they don't have any form of aliasing system).

TL;DR:
Uhh, no. That (TLDR) is pretty much the problem, and a delayed-response system that flat-out requires significantly higher amounts of moderator action would probably not work.

Updated by anonymous

controlled tagging is a bad idea. all it will result in is less tagging. I try to skim over images for tags put on it that have only a few entries because they're probably typos, lolsofunny, or something, but sometimes I leave tags alone because they do FIT the image, even if there are only 2 of them. (for example, dildo_saddle)

While it's all well and good for mods to approve of all tags, all it's going to be is the mods looking at the name of the tag, and not the attached pictures and going off of that. "Why do we need a tag about that?" they ask, before deleting it. It's not any negligence, simply "That's a strange tag that doesn't have any use, delete."... plus, no offense meant, this opens up the possibility of abuse. (esoecially if privledged accounts are involved) "I don't like this tag/uploader/post/kink. I'll delete it, it's weird and funny and shouldn't be here."... if *I* ran around and did that, it'd be tag vandalism.

No, the 'better' solution would be for users to go through and actually pay attention to how images are tagged, and make necessary changes. is 'tall_grass" pointless? then get rid of it. Do you like "tall_grass"? then go out there and skim "outdoors" and find more images to tag as "tall_grass" is there a tag showing the difference between outside in the backyard and outside in the wilds of africa? then make one. Have you realized there's no tag for a forest as a location? make one. If you 'limit' tags you're jsut making more owrk for the mods and limiting what peopel think they can do.

this is a community, we do this together. While No one would mourn my removing this website from my bookmarks, there would be fewer tag edits, a few less uploads, etc. leaving the work to someone else. I'm sure there are other websites out there if you want all of the art/tags to be moderator approved, but I don't think this is it.

actually.. what acct is saying? that's pretty much summing up what I'm trying to say perfectly. So, so read his post again.

As one of the translators around here, I don't really see the point of having a privileged account. I do it because I like to, and while it's all well and good to be recognized by the community for contributing, my reward comes in the form of reputation. I wouldn't mind some sort of identification though, since I'd personally like to handle translation requests and answer general questions, and it would be nice for users to be able to see my username and go "Oh, that's a translator."

As for quality control, I think that's best left to us translators. If I see a translation that's inaccurate or the interpretation is just plain poor, I'll usually correct it, otherwise I leave it alone. I certainly do pay attention to others' translations, and I'm sure they do the same. And if anyone has reason to suspect a poor translation or just a copy-paste from Google Translate, I'd always be willing to double-check on it if a user sends me a link.

The last thing I'd like to see is a "Rate this translation" feature, though.

A suggestion: A new field/tag type for: "Name of Item"

Basically, some images/flashes/1-off comics have a distinctive name attached. Additionally, some flashes use a distinctive song. Since this are generally more-or-less unique, it may have some issues with tag-counts. Additionally, it would make searching for a very specific flash or one-off comic much faster. (to be more precise, this would be like pools, except pools generally have more than one item. Unless we want to start making one-item pools..)

Also, thumbnail option for flashes.

Updated by anonymous

idea: make a distinction between images removed because an artist requested it be removed and images which were removed because they were horrible and/or broke the rules. the post limit formula is determined with an equation that includes a variable for deleted posts and i feel it is unfair to punish users for a third party's actions

here's one that might be nice... a counter to display how many uploads you have left today. I can see my total number of uploads I *can* submit, but not how many I *have* submitted. also, when is the 'daily reset' for uploaded files? I used all of my uploads today, what time can I expect to be able to upload again so I'm not just spamming the server? :D

Just a note like 'uploads reset at 13:00 HST' or something :P

Anyway. *tossing that out there*
(gonna feel stupid if this has already been covered or already IS... but, I don't upload too much... but I DO tend to save a folder full of files and upload them in batches. ^^; )

Updated by anonymous

not daily, lets you post more when the previous images get approved =p

Updated by anonymous

Actually, if I remember correctly how many unapproved uploads you have is factored into the equation they show you (it's that little -X at the end) -- so the number is 'how many left' at any given point, not your maximum.

And yeah, what they said. It's not 'posts per day', it's 'posts not yet approved / deleted'.

Updated by anonymous

Durf. Open mouth, insert foot.

I read somewhere it was a daily limit *blush*

Also, you're correct, it is displayed as a - X at the end... unfortunatly, my eyes glaze over whenever they get near complicated looking math (hush, I'm an artist, not a mathematician) so I didn't even notice that. Thanks so much, both of you for the information :D

That was the most retarded idea ever.

A cum button should take a webcam photo of the person pressing it, and submit it directly to the artist along with exact time, date and explicit details of the images they browsed to (and any comments they made) before dumping their load on that particular image.

Now that'll be sure to win over the hearts and minds of all the artists... Not to mention give us a hundred times as many takedown requests as normal.

Updated by anonymous

D: ... but this was the drawing of the cute fuzzy fox I drew for my grandma before she died!!! Why did you cum on it??

Updated by anonymous

How about a download link that lets you save a file with a list of tags (hyphen-delimited, maybe) and then its unique ID? I'm tired of having to manually add the artist's names to the beginning of the files when I add them to my massive pornography collection.

Updated by anonymous

How about a way to make long comments less... window filling?

I'm thinking something like:

Blah blah blah bli-blah, ba-blah blahblah blah. Blah blah blah bli-blah, ba-blah blahblah blah. Blah blah blah bli-blah, ba-blah blahblah blah. Blah blah blah bli-blah, ba-blah blahblah blah. Blah blah blah bli-blah, ba-blah blahblah blah. Blah blah blah bli-blah, ba-blah... (see more)

where 'see more' is a link that will display the full text of the comment without reloading the webpage, similar to (I think) how when it says 'X comments below threshold' on an image.

This way, people can skim past comments they are not interested in, and people can post longer comments without feeling 'guilty' about posting a wall of text.

Alternatively, you could provide a way to hide the text like a live journal cut would, so that the poster can control where the 'see more' pops up:

See, my opinon on this is long winded and vocal and I have a lot to say on the matter, but I understand that some people are not here for that and that they, therefore might want to skip this comment... [sm] So, here's my opinion! Blah blah blah bli-blah, ba-blah blahblah blah. Blah blah blah bli-blah, ba-blah blahblah blah.

resulting in:

See, my opinon on this is long winded and vocal and I have a lot to say on the matter, but I understand that some people are not here for that and that they, therefore might want to skip this comment... (see more)

or maybe a combination of the two, so that someone who's post would 'naturally' snip itself shorter could select where it 'snips' so that they don't end up saying something awkward and needing to add more or remove text so move the see more statement (Example: "...and about baking! I think it sucks (see more) that it takes so long to learn how to do it right! I love cookies!" or similar. This would be even more true if the 'snipper' would cut you off midword, (associate, cockatrice, rape, sextant, shitake...)

buuuut... ultimatly, I think the very first suggestion is best and easiest XD

While you guys are clearly not retarded assholes developing a game, once you start charging money people are going to be drawn to the little things that nobody notices now that there's no money going on.

I wonder how many times "filtering" specific things from our searchs was mentioned..?
Personally, I would like to -not- view things I don't want to.

Example; I hate boobs. They are big globs of flesh and meat that deliver milk to babies and I personally find them disgusting.
So, with a filter I could type in either "Canine, Dragon, Feline, etc" and filter "Breasts, boobs, whateverelsegoeshere, etc."

Yay filters!

Also, a sort by 'top rated, top viewed, top favorited' thing would be nice.

Just type -(whatever tag) when doing searches.

The 'Favorites' tab in the Posts section shows the pictures with the highest amount of votes on any given day, but it's pointless right now since most pics have a rating of 0.
