What's the difference between a birthday gift and a regular gift?

Hmm. The situation in which you get it. I guess we could just alias it to gift. But I think implying it is better because, in my opinion, there is a difference.
TL;DR both of these tags can use a bit of cleaning.

Hm, some of these need to be cleaned out. (Lightly) Wrapped in ribbon? Not really a gift. Just says birthday? Not really a gift.

Of course, this is a problem under gift itself as well.

Should at least be in a box or wrapped up. I think the important thing is that the contents are mostly hidden, or reasonably were hidden before some unwrapping/unboxing happened. A ribbon would have to cover the majority of the item.

If we're ignoring the gifts in the background that definitely count as gifts, I could give pictures like this a slide, at least the character is wrapped in their ribbon until it's untied.

Folks are somewhat unsure about what to do with some of the gift tags, largely over which of them should be kept or aliased away (see topic #27634 and topic #27635). Though a lot of the gift tags do need to be cleaned. Many of the gift tags are tagged on posts that need to be edited and re-tagged (since a large quantity of these posts would fit better with one of the ribbons-related tags).
For tags like birthday_gift or christmas_gift, I feel these tags could be worth keeping. When being tagged on posts, they should be restricted to the context which gives these tags their namesake (birthday_gift should only be used for birthday posts, christmas_gift should only be used for christmas posts, etc). I think these tags would be worth keeping if they're utilized this way.

If the birthday_gift tag is restricted to only posts that are also tagged birthday then I'm not sure if it adds any utility to keep it. You could search birthday and gift together and get the same result. In my opinion, it's not any more intuitive to keep the 'event_gift' tags.
Maybe it would have some use in a scenario when a gift is present in a birthday context without it also being a birthday gift, but that situation seems very unlikely to arise.

Folk gather around a table for birthdays. They gather around a tree for christmas. There ya go.
