Topic: cat_memes nuke

Posted under Tag/Wiki Projects and Questions

I would've made a BUR to nuke cat_memes, but it won't allow me to make a BUR with that command (because only an admin can nuke tags, even though an admin has to approve the BUR to do the actual nuking, so they would be the ones to nuke tags regardless of who makes the BUR)...

In any case, I don't see the point of this tag? A single user is largely responsible for adding it to 1.4k posts, and who also created the wiki page, with no discussion. Whether or not a meme is associated with a cat seems irrelevant, and I don't suspect we'll also want dog_memes or lizard_memes or snake_memes or any other <species>_memes tag to follow suit.

Hm, I think <animal>_memes are not bad, they could be used as a way to list all more specific memes related to the animal.
I don't think it's as vague as videogames, but I don't have an argument to justify that.

I don't see the problem here.
You may not see the point, but you're just one person.
Others may find it useful.
I for one can see the benefits of having such a tag.

Why does it exist? IDRC why, but it does and it has its uses....it's useful.
why get rid of something useful and suits people's needs?

What if people want to see cat meme art...well? Well they have a tag.
Whoever had the OCD to do this gets a thumbs up from me.

If it goes away or not doesn't impact my search

That still seems like a poor way to categorize them. A cat-related meme doesn't have to feature a cat, and there's nothing to tie the tags together visually. Sometimes it's not exclusively a cat. It's just that an off-site source had a funny picture with a cat once, that picture was then spread around, and parodies were made of it that may or may not still have a cat. And I wouldn't be surprised if some people start using the tag on posts that have a meme featuring a cat, even if the meme being referenced isn't based on a cat.

Still, even if there should be tags like this, it seems better to have it handled through implications, rather than taking upon oneself to manually dump it on 1.4k posts in a month without discussing it. As it is, no one's discussed what even counts as a "cat meme". This user is even creating new meme tags and listing it as a "cat meme" (like it's_raining_cats_and_dogs, it's first and only use added to a post at the same as cat_memes, which they then added to the wiki), and considers characters to be memes (like pusheen or tardar_sauce, regardless of context), again without discussion. Trying to come up with a consensus for what could count for such a tag and clean it up at this point would be very time consuming, so it'd still be better to nuke it and start over, IMO.

Oh yeah, this is definitively not ok behavior.

If the intent of nuking is to clean up the tag, so a better categorization choice can be chosen afterwards, then I agree with nuking.

They're doing the exact same thing with spongebob_memes too, FWIW. Manually adding spongebob_memes to posts, creating new meme tags for it, and listing them in the wiki they made.

They've also made a new smudge_the_cat tag as a copyright, and seem to be using it identically to woman_yelling_at_a_cat (they added the former to all posts with the latter, and all posts with the former should have the latter). Its wiki is empty, giving no reason for its existence.

Have you tried contacting the user in question?

The wiki page is just a list of links (not formatted properly at all), the tag isn't clearly defined, it's not visually apparent so it's not TWYS, it's applied to posts that aren't memes at all (maneki-neko, pusheen), and they're making up memes as they go along (cats_and_laser_pointers_(meme)? Cats pouncing at lasers isn't a meme).

It's not very useful to go around collecting vaguely defined "cat related memes" that often don't have any cats in them. If someone wants memes with cats in them, they can search for feline meme, if they want a list of memes, there's meme.

Big +1 on nuking this tag, along with other similar/related tags this user has made.

Not yet. I initially only noticed cat_memes having such a high usage when I attempted to make a BUR. Then I noticed the others and noted them here as I tried to clean a few things up. And I wasn't sure if there may (however unlikely) be a good reason for these tags and the admins don't consider it a problem.

Updated

I'm not against the concept of an umbrella tag for cat-related memes, but such a thing should be properly proposed as a set of implications.

Also I can't help but notice this is the same user responsible for this nonsense. Somebody really needs to teach them how sets work.

The better approach to this probably would have been if they just made a "memes by category" section on the meme page in addition to the existing A-Z list.

Works better as a public set.

New tags (that have a wide-ranging effect) should, at the very least, be discussed on the forums first before being implemented.
Otherwise, you would run across threads like this, questioning the validity and viability of the tag.

IMO, it is useless as a umbrella tag for the reasons @maplebytes have already mentioned. Therefore, it should be nuked (or converted into a set).
Others have already pointed out the potential for "cat related memes" to not have any cats involved, such as the case of exploitable memes where people's OCs are drawn over the "cat".
The opposite is true as well, with "non-cat related memes" being turned into a "cat related meme" because someone added in their cat OC.

TL;DR cat_memes would instantly be invalid if there are no felines involved, see cat_memes -feline.

Shall we also have dog_memes, pony_memes, otter_memes, fox_memes, whatever other animal has identifiable trends in its depictions that can be grouped memes? I think not.
