We don't imply characters to species because a character can be depicted as another species

Are these characters or species? When I looked earlier, kittongue was set to species, now it's set to character. Is this another case of Pokemon, where it's a species except when it's treated as a character?

This question has been asked a few times on requests like this, and OP never seems to clarify.

I did try researching this before (when I replied to one of those threads I linked above) but it seemed like a lot of the lore information was paywalled behind Patreon, so I couldn't find much.

From the limited research I was able to do, I'm pretty certain that (at least some) wildmons are species rather than characters - an example is https://www.furaffinity.net/view/53251281/ which reads "Sparky is a vixult, a species of wildmons..." - so we know that sparky_vixult is a character who is part of the vixult species - so a vixult -> wildmons_(catcouch) implication would be valid.

The kittongue tag was originally created as a species, but for some reason OneFattyCatty decided to change it to a character. (source)
