Topic: Tag Implication: while_playing_videogame -> gaming

Posted under Tag Alias and Implication Suggestions

What I get for posting when half-asleep; Thought that was an implication to video_games. Could also have it imply gaming though. Or should gaming go away?

Eh, I dont think we should pass this one.

Perhaps while+playing_videogame -> video_games would work. The tag gaming is barely used

Please no. video_games gets used for characters *from* video games, whether or not there are any video games being played in the image. It's pretty much worthless for searching. gaming gets used for games being played, so it's a better tag even if it isn't used as much.

Yep, and I think we already had that discussion a few of months ago. Video_games is a catch-all tag: characters, settings, franchises, game elements, hardware, actual flash games, etc. Pretty much everything that relates to video games in some way. I'm not entirely sure why it exists: it's so broad and covers so many subjects that I wouldn't ever search for it myself.

While the gaming tag is for, well, games being played. And I wouldn't say that it's barely used. At 193 images, it's in the top 5% of all the general tags.

Huh. Soudnds like most of video_games needs to be wiped and it applied only to, well, actual video games. It's becoming as bloated as the ur-species tags.

Just search controller and video_games and you'll see images of playing them. Its that simple. No need to wipe a useful tag

how is tagging a character from a video game without a video game in he image useful? That's the sort of bloat in the tag that needs to be wiped.

I didn't say we should nuke video_games. I'm saying that we should imply while_playing_video_games to gaming instead of video_games because it's more useful that way.

But really, video_games is hilariously overbroad. "Any image or animation which shows a video game, characters playing one, or characters from video games." Why on earth are all of those lumped together? If I'm looking for characters playing games, I'm not looking for characters from video games (not that I'm opposed to them, I just don't care and it clutters up the results). If I'm looking for characters from video games (...I have no idea why I'd be doing that, that's crazy wide, but I'll grant that it might be useful for someone), I am not looking for characters playing video games, or a game console somewhere in the picture. Again, it just clutters up the results.

Mhm. I don't see a need to tag a character as being from a video game unless they're being shown literally coming out from a video game, which would be denoted by having the video_game tag there anyways, which renders that effectively moot. Why I'm suggesting a mass cleanup of the tag and repurposing it towards only when a video game is present, whether depicting one (image of an NES cart, image of Zelda title screen, etc) or depicting people playing one.

Here's the old thread: forum #83876

I still agree with Char: video_games is too bloated to be useful. Besides the characters and random furries cosplaying as Link etc, I noticed several common subtypes when I browsed it:

- Game backgrounds. There's already the underused game_background tag, which could be used for images where the background is obviously from a game.

- Actual gaming, which would fall under the gaming tag.

- Images that feature game UIs prominently, I suggest the tag gui for this type: post #95775 post #170527 post #274514 post #2981

- And the flash games. Sometimes tagged as game and sometimes as video_games. All should be sorted under one standard.

Hrm. I think I forgot a few subtypes, but in any case.. The video_games tag could definitely use some re-purposing or at least major clean up.

I'm currently using flash_game tag for flash games because of it was suggested here. I'm keeping game tags for characters playing any kind of game.

That seems fine to me. But if we're going to tag the flash games under that, then the game wiki entry needs to be changed. Since it currently says "Most things tagged here will regard flash interactive games.".
