Wow Blaziken. You're just an incendiary little firebird, aren't ya? Trying to get as many people as riled up as possible.

You know, I'm willing bet almost any amount of money that had the general consensus been for this mascot, you'd be arguing against it. Just because.

Actually, no. I'm just tired of the blinding idiocy on the site nowadays.

Blaze... if the site is causing you aggravation and frustration, then take a break for a bit. Stay out of the forums, and the comments on pictures (change your comment threshold in your settings to something like 100 and you'll never see any comments) and just chill out for a bit. It's never good when things start to stress you out, especially when they're so easily avoidable.

We'll miss you, but we'll be here when you get back. Promise ♥

Nothing like makeing the site scream PENIS!!!. Not that
I mind Dylan, he is cute, and unique as well an armadillo
but when I come to e621, Dylan is not what I think of.
Seeing something like that on the front page makes the
site look like well a gay male site, not the wonderful blend of everything it is. If I did not know what was
contained in e621 and saw the mascot I probably would have
never went any further into the site than the homepage.

Updated by anonymous

I honestly don't see why we couldn't have just stuck with Esix. This new mascot is just too bland and generic for e621.

Updated by anonymous

I do love how all these people who rarely comment and never post in the forums suddenly pop up and start whining about how horrible the new mascot is... and how much better the old mascots were. Most of these people not even realizing that the administration's changed... *shakes head*

Updated by anonymous

I like Dylan and Esix and I think they both have potential.

Updated by anonymous

ExplosiveBlaziken makes a good point, so naturally the whiners point fingers and groan.

I lol'd.

I'm not so fond of armadillos either, or Narse, but so what? It's not my site. I have no say in the matter, just the same as all of ya, unless Varka says we do. So man up already, jeez.

Updated by anonymous

You know, initially I was pretty angry about the new mascot...
It was odd, and it was annoying, and I was a bit upset that he was just kind of foisted on all of us without any consideration for our opinions.

But then I remembered this comic from Chugworth Academy:
http://e621.net/post/show/109601/almadirro-armadillo-blood-chugworth_academy-discov

And now, while I'm still a bit irked at the "Hi, we just made up a mascot and put his big ol' cock on the front page... enjoy!" I at least feel a little better about him being an armadillo, now.

Why can't we have "Change Background" thingy like the one that Google has,so users can change what they can see once they open front page.Non registred users won't see anything (blank),while registred users can change mascot in Settings options between:armadillo,Hexerade and Esix.

Really.. you agree with that tripe? a gay male site
A nude male furry armadillo shows up on the front screen, and suddenly e621 looks like a gay male site and you agree with that? Not something like; "wow, what type of strange furry art site is this?"

Well, yes. A neutral Furry character, at least as a broad mascot, generally implies Furry Art, and is inclusive of all shapes, sizes, and genders. A giant Furry cock on the front page implies a website devoted to pictures of Furries with cocks.

I didn't think it was tripe, I thought it was a valid point; mostly that we shouldn't be so explicit on the front page.

For that matter, I wish Narse would clean up the picture a little; especially if it's going to be there, as an official mascot. The "E-621" on his toga looks like a messy afterthought.

I also really like BranislavDJ's idea about being able to set a different display option for the front page. That's a pretty clever idea, and I wish I'd thought of it. :P

What we're planning to do is give people the OPTION of choosing what mascot they want to see on the site; in particular, have a 'change mascot' link in the corner of the page that, site-wide, changes the mascot imagery shown on the front page as well as the new little banner thing we'll be doing at the top corner of each page.

I've contacted the original artists who created the top 3 voted mascots and have asked them if they would like to submit an improved/finalised/new image of their mascot to go on the site. This way, everyone can have what they want :p

technical note: the background changer will probably be implemented as a javascript include, which will use your local cookies to store your preferences. This means it should save and display your preferences site-wide without logging in. It also saves me from having to touch the horrid Ruby on Rails the site engine is coded in.

There will, of course, be an option for NO mascot also.

I also like this guy: http://e621.net/post/show/109631/armadillo-armor-claws-dylan_the_armadillo-e621-kei

As char said, CONSTRUCTIVE bitching is good - it means we can get stuff sorted, and find a comfortable middle ground for everyone. Flaming and trolling, less so.

Keep it relevant and constructive, people!

I think it's just a testament to the heated opinions over the issue. So what if someone hasn't posted before? Doesn't void their opinions, nor does it mean they're all new around these parts. Personally (and I'm probably not alone here) I'm happy to browse and/or fap in silence 9 times out of 10, but I felt strongly enough about the mascot (silly though it may be) to start posting.

Really glad to hear about the option to change the layout, as that's fairest to everyone. I'm still a big fan of a (at least relatively) gender-neutral default (like Esix) - and of using a version of Dylan that integrates e621's layout themes, but hopefully both of those things will be possible in the future.

Thanks Varka and e6 team! :)

o.O I'm gonna assume you mean beside, or besides him and... I'm not sure what the point of that would be or how it'd make things better... there are a number of female users (and I know of at least one mod) who do not have a penis. ...but, that aside, why does this matter? I mean, as a female... I'm... insanely happy with how Varka does things. :P

Fair enough. I guess for me... it's a matter of... This is a community. It's insanely easy to contribute by uploading, by editing tags, by commenting or bouncing into the forums every few days. There are many ways to do something to make the website better for others, be it by providing new content, or making so existing content can be found more easily, or just commenting on posts you like, or joining in on the discussion on whether 'equine penis' is superior to 'horsecock'. This said... when someone has been around for 6 months, yet has uploaded 1 image, which they tagged with 'female sex tag_me,' and added 'pussy' to come other image about a week after they joined... have never commented on any image or post....

What would we lose if this person disappeared tomorrow?

Very little.

Why should we care what this person's opinion is...? Even if we changed it exactly to what they wanted... they would probably not ever post "this is better, thank you" or anything to acknowledge that things changed how they wanted.

I guess part of it is this:

but I felt strongly enough about the mascot (silly though it may be) to start posting.

Start, sure. continue posting, and it'll be 'worth' more :)

NO offense meant, jsut stating my humble opinion. :)

Thinks you wanted me to correct the typos a did so.

And yeah I normally dont post, normally dont feel I have to. I just lashed out when I saw a big ol' aramadillo cock stareing at me when I came to the site. Did not mean to go off on an anti-Dylan rant, just that there is alot of people that come to e621, that are not lookin for cocks. As mentioned in other posts what would go through your mind if you are a straight male, or lesbian female, or just someone that wasnt in the mood to see a big ol' cock infront of them?

As for the idea of being able to seleect the macot you want, that is a great idea, as long as the default is something neutral, that dont offend people.

Official end of my ranting, goes back to my usual silence.

Updated by anonymous

Don't like it.
I don't see the connection between an armadillo and e621 what-so-ever other than "It's hard to take down."

C'mon, eSix was a way better mascot.

Updated by anonymous

Wow, I leave for two weeks...

I have to agree with AuroraStar that Dylan on the front page leaves me with the impression that this is a gay-themed furry site, as opposed to a pan-global booru of all things furry. I think he could be inadvertently turning away newcomers interested in female. Of course, the opposing point might have been said of Esix, so I guess there's no winning here.

Myself, though, I rarely see the front page. As a regular, I keep a shortcut straight to the tag search that I'm most interested in. Still, I'll be looking forward to the mascot change option if the mascot imagery is going to appear elsewhere around the site. Nothing beats personalization.

And I feel the need to disagree with SnowWolf. The artists I follow on FA and check for new work all have enough of a following that I get beaten to the post pretty much every time. Also, e621's new content rate is "good enough" for me, such that I can't get motivated to actively hunt elsewhere. So my "contribution" ends up mostly being through the odd forum posting, which I can understand doesn't appeal to everyone.

The lerks, they are legion, and the throbbing pulse of this site, even if the contributors are the lifeforce feeding it.

I just think he needs to be blue and yellow with some hexagons somewhere.

Much better, and the cartoony look is also a nice touch.

Updated by anonymous

Eh. I prefer the realistic--or at least not0toony style. The color scheme is nice as are the hexagons, but I like the general anatomy--body structure, leg configuration. feet, claws and so forth of Narse' version. I like narse's style in general, actually :D

though Narse' dylan looks a bit... . I dunno.. his eyes aren't quite right... I look into them and I think... old... blinding.... tired... not seductive. I cn't put my finger on why.

other fun 'highlights' from the thread:

I can agree that Dylan needs a bit more e621 in him... as such, I'd like to ask the graphic designers out there who studied color theory to give me some suggestions (and hell, maybe even a Photoshop mockup) of how we can change his colors and make him fit in more with the site.

Regarding the hexagons: I like the idea of hexagonifying his plates a bit; I think this could tie in nicely without being too obtrusive.

Narse intentionally did the mascot as unstylised as possible; this was to ensure we could bias and tweak his appearance as we went; there's actually another layer of shading I disabled which made him way darker - so we do have options.

So - suggestions (and mockups?) of how to make Dylan more e6-y?

(BTW< he got very little feedback in that respect. outside of "lol blue lol hexagons lolol")

Front page image has been modified so the search box covers his crotch; as I mentioned before the whole 'porn on the front page' thing was only temporary (because, holy shit, 100,000 images).

I'm still taking on feedback regarding Dylan and the mascot situation; again as I mentioned mascots are an ongoing evolving thing and I'd like to make it clear that Dylan is going to change over time.

To everyone who was unhappy with the gender of the character: is it more tolerable now that you can't see his junk?

Hey folks,

Thanks for the feedback; just to remind you that the front page IS going to be made work-safe (and not so male-specific) very soon, and that I'm going to keep tweaking the mascot over time to ensure he's in keeping with good taste. :p

Keep an eye on the front page for a work-safe, censored version going up.

Thanks everyone for remaining civil and constructive in your feedback; I want you to know that I *am* listening, and trying to balance making something awesome with something that doesn't offend everyone.

Not to mention, ppost fucking number 3:

Oh I'm sure there'll end up being a female Dylan sometime...

So, let's sum up all of this, with bullet points, for fun:

  • Dylan was made purposely generic, so that he could evolve and change over time to appeal to a wide variety of viewers.
  • This includes presumably allowing him the ability to gender swap in some fasion.
  • Hey, everyone is right, Dylan needs more e621 to him. What should we do to make Dylan more e6ish? Anyone? Anyone...? Bueller?
  • Hey, we're already talking to the top 3 mascot creators so that we can use those mascots also since so many people like them. And we're going to make it so you can swap between them, as you like. So everyone can be happy. Isn't that great?

Updated by anonymous

You're overreacting SnowWolf.

People can still post their opinions about mascot choice, even if it's to re-iterate something that's already been said, and even if a settlement of sorts was achieved. You can't determine whether or not someone read every singe page by the fact that they made their choice in mascot made. Now, if the guy had come swinging about how Varka never listens to us, and how dare they force us to view Dylan forever and ever, that would have been another matter entirely.

But he didn't. He merely stated that he didn't like him, and that he did like another mascot.

People are, and should be, still welcome to post their thoughts and preferences. THAT is what this thread is about, after all.

Updated by anonymous

SnowWolf said:

Well, I still think the "E-621" on his sash should at least be more defined and a little less slap-dash. It's like "Eh, I had a picture here and I drew "E-621" on him and now we have a mascot." The E in particular really needs work.

Updated by anonymous

My main criticism with the character is that it's too boring and generic - sure, armadillos are a seldom-used creature in furrydom, but there's really nothing about the character that shouts "e621".

Obviously, the biggest changes should be in coloration and the application of hexagons; that drawing that was posted a few pages back is a good example of what direction you should take the character - colors should consist of blues and yellows, with a little white and maybe some orange. Hexagons are also important and you should look for ways to implement them onto the character. Stuff like that is what gave eSix and even Hexerade charm, and it can work for Dylan here too.

Though I do admit to having been slightly frustrated with peopel going "I wanted a female mascot!" when the 3rd post was "we'll have a female version" too, basically.

It's fine if people have their opinions, it jsut bugs me when their opinions are based off of reading the first post and nothing else. :( This is a long thread, which is why I compiled all of varka's replies about the relevant stuff.
