dieselwzl said: Please let me know how I'm wrong. :B Tanuki are canines.
While tanukis are members of the Canidae family, they are, in fact, their own species. They are one of two members of the genus Nyctereutes: Nyctereutes viverrinus (Japanese Raccoon Dog), and Nyctereutes procyonoides (Common/Chinese/Asian Raccoon Dog).
Technically speaking, they could be considered canines, if you're speaking in terms of Family. However, the other members of this family includes "domestic dogs, wolves, foxes, coyotes and other extant and extinct species".
On top of all this, 'Raccoon Dog' comes from it's resemblance to raccoons, and aren't closely related to them. Their closets relative are true foxes, not American raccoons. [The raccoon dog is named for the resemblance of its masked face to that of the common raccoon (Procyon lotor), a procyonid to which it is not closely related.]
So, in a way, tanukis aren't canines. They're canids. Same family as canines, but different genus (and species). D. Dog (Canis familiaris/Canis lupus familiaris) Wolf (Canus lupus) Fox (Vulpis/ Cerdocyon/ Lycalopex/Urocyon/ Otocyon) Coyote (Canis latrans) Dhole (Cuon alpinus)
Common Raccoon Dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides) Tanuki/Japanese Raccoon Dog (Nyctereutes viverrinus)
You basically just proved me right. :P Yes, canid is technically different than canine, but the layperson doesn't really make that distinction, so it's easier to just say "canine" so the majority of people comprehend what you're getting across.
You talk to Ban on your island the next day. He says "Yo, Tom Nook just stopped away my debt after I did him a special favor!" and then never elaborates

So, in short...
Well yes, but actually no.
