I've just noticed, but HD's eyecolor seems to change throughout the comic. Starts off as yellowish, with a shade of red in it, then after her first night with the SM they started to appear much more red/pink. Here, assuming the little girl is HD, they're mostly yellow.

Could it be an artistic representation of her innocence? Mental state?

i wish i could relate. I grew up on a weird spot on a busy road with a high speed limit and no sidewalk so as a kid it was nearly impossible to get around so making and visiting nearby friends was hard and without any siblings i ended up playing alone a lot until Xbox Live came out. Some of my best memories are of playing with friends around the world on Xbox Live though.
