I wouldn't go by MatPat often. He only theorizes, but sometimes he acts like they're fact, when they're never proven as such. Some of his fans are no better with that, too.

Yes, I know that, but at times when he refers to previous theories of his, like he did in Mario Timeline video, he'll say he proved something, which a theory never does. A theory can be proven or disproven, but never is it proof of something.

I'm pretty sure genders were introduced long before gender-unique sprites were a thing. Male/female distinction was a Gen 2 thing and, if I'm not mistaken, alternate sprites weren't commonplace until Gen 4. So, yes.
