Ness is the main protagonist of the Super Nintendo RPG EarthBound—also known as Mother 2 in Japan—which was developed by Shigesato Itoi with Nintendo.

He is a young human boy with powerful psychic abilities. A silent protagonist who the player is allowed to name, his relatively normal life gets turned upside down when a meteor lands in his hometown of Onett. This leads to him getting wrapped up in a quest to save the entire planet from the evil alien called Giygas. He is almost always seen wearing his trademark striped shirt, blue shorts, and red baseball cap. In keeping with this, he often uses a baseball bat as a melee weapon along with his psychic powers.

Aside from his appearance in EarthBound/Mother 2, he is well known for his appearances in the Super Smash Bros. series as a representative for the broader EarthBound series.
