Colloquially referred to as EVA or Evangelion, Neon Genesis Evangelion is a Japanese animated television show produced by Gainax and Tatsunoko Production and directed by Hideaki Anno that aired between 1995 and 1996.
The original Evangelion series is a post-apocalyptic anime, set in a futuristic Tokyo fifteen years after a worldwide cataclysm. The story follows the exploits of Shinji Ikari, a teenage boy recruited by a special organization dubbed NERV and his ability to pilot the giant mecha protecting the Earth called "Evangelions" from the attacks of mysterious "Angels".
The Evangelion franchise gained widespread acclaim and quickly spawned OVAs, feature films, manga, merchandise, and other media properties. This included 5 feature films/OVAs: Death & Rebirth, The End of Evangelion, 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone, 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance, and 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo. A sixth feature film, dubbed Evangelion: 3.0+1.0, was set to be complete in 2015, but the final release date has yet to be announced as of yet. By the end of 2013 the franchise had grossed over 1.3 billion dollars.
