A situation that gives the idea of "looking into eternity". One appears to look into infinity, they literally "saw forever".

Generally applies to one of these situations:

• The subject depicted is repeated within itself in a sequence, apparently forever, only vanishing into infinity (see mise en abyme and the Droste effect)
• It is implied that the subject is peering into an endless void, has just seen something no mortal should ever see, or something so horrifying that he/she will never be the same again.
