Chao are a humanoid species of small animal from the Sonic the Hedgehog series, often raised as pets such as in the Chao Gardens from the Sonic Adventure games.

Their appearances can vary heavily depending how they're raised, coming in three alignments with four base typings and for sub-typings. Each alignments share certain defining characteristics, such as hero chao having their iconic halos and dark chao having angry expressions.

Certain special kinds of chao drastically differ in appearance from others, such as the immortal chaos chao and the chao that visually resemble other sonic characters.
