A radiograph is produced by having a subject positioned between a machine that generates "X-rays" (a form of electromagnetic radiation), and film or a sensitive plate. Parts of the subject will absorb varying amounts of radiation, preventing it from passing through to the film or plate, depending on how dense that part is, the clearer and whiter it will appear on the radiograph or output image — for example, bones will appear white, while muscle, fat, skin and organs will be varying shades of grey (radiograph images may also be tinted or have various colours applied for better visibility and to differentiate parts of the subject).
In art, radiographs may be depicted as a film printout, or they may be shown through a machine similar to an airport scanner, usually simplified to a tablet or screen that displays a radiograph of an object or character while that screen is in front of them.
