My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic is the fourth iteration of Hasbro Inc.'s My Little Pony toy line and media franchise, which included an animated series that ran for nine seasons from October 2010 to October 2019, a theatrical film, two hour long specials, and a series of animated shorts; as well as a series of spin off movies.
Friendship is Magic follows the daily lives and adventures of a cast of predominantly female equine characters in the magical land of Equestria. The show saw unexpectedly high ratings, developing a large fanbase outside of the historical My Little Pony target demographic of 6-10 year old girls, and becoming a pop culture phenomenon. For a time, this popularity was a subject of significant internet discussion and controversy.

- Pony characters drawn in the official style of the show, or similar to it should almost always be tagged as feral, even when standing upright or sitting in a "human-like" way
- Pony characters loosely based on the canon proportions/style may also be tagged as semi-anthro in some cases, if their anatomy is altered (eg. with an upright posture along with the addition of humanoid shoulders, hips, and/or torso, while still having hooves instead of hands and feet)

The "Mane Six"
The cast of six pony protagonists that the series primarily revolves around, "mane six" is a popular pun-based fan nickname for the cast:

A trio of filly ponies that star in multiple episodes across the series, regularly acting as a "second cast"

- Scootaloo, nobody's younger sister, although Rainbow Dash often acts as her surrogate big sister

Six students of Twilight Sparkle's Friendship School, which star in multiple episodes during seasons 8 and 9

Recurring Secondary Characters
"Supporting Characters" that make frequent appearances throughout the series, and across multiple seasons. Alicorn Princesses
- Princess Celestia Twilight Sparkle's mentor, and monarch of Equestria (a title shared with her sister), controls the sun

Background Characters
Characters which appear throughout the series in the background of scenes, often in crowd shots, and sometimes briefly interacting with or reacting to the main characters - where they may have a very minor speaking role (one or two lines). Unlike "minor characters" background characters are rarely ever referred to by name by other characters, and rarely have more than a few seconds of screen time outside of the background.
While there are dozens of unnamed and named background characters (usually only officially given names through merchandise); the set of background characters below have names and personalities that mostly, or entirely originated from the fandom, are frequently depicted in fan art, and are especially notable for having their fandom provided names and characterizations canonized in the season five episode Slice of Life:
- Derpy Hooves, a clumsy, scatterbrained cross-eyed pegasus, also officially named as "Muffins", and "Ditzy Doo", works as a "mailmare"
- Doctor Whooves, a pony with a resemblance to the Tenth Doctor, appears to be an inventor and scientist
- Lyra Heartstrings, excitable Ponyville resident, often used for background gags, often seen alongside her best friend...
- Bon Bon, also named as Sweetie Drops, a secret agent, usually seen alongside Lyra Heartstrings, her "subtly" implied girlfriend (and later wife)

Friendship is Magic includes a vast selection of real world animals, anthropomorphic characters, and a variety of mythological creatures from various cultures including, but not limited to dragons, gryphons, and hippogriffs. Ponies
The dominant species of Equestria, and the majority of the cast:

- Earth pony - a "basic" pony, without wings or a horn
- Unicorn - a horned pony, able to use magic, which is most often in the form of telekinesis; teleportation, conjuring objects, and other spells using unicorn magic are also shown
- Pegasus - a winged pony, able to fly, sometimes at unnatural speed (fast enough to break the sound barrier); also capable of walking on clouds, and manipulating the weather
- Alicorn - a pony with both wings and a horn, considered beings of exceptional magical power, alicorns in FiM are usually royalty, with the title of princess
- Bat pony - ponies with bat ears, bat wings, fangs and slit pupils

- Changeling - a pony-like species with insect features, able to shapeshift
- Draconequus - a chimera species, of which Discord is the only known member
