Species: wildcat
The wildcat is a species complex involving the European wildcat (F. sylvestris) and the African wildcat (F. lybica). The European wildcat resides in forests of Europe and the Caucasus and has long fur, a bushy tail, and is generally dark in color. The African wildcat instead inhabits the semi-arid landscapes and steppes of Africa, Arabia, and western and central Asia. Contrary to the European wildcat, the African wildcat is sandy grey in color with short fur and a tapering tail.
Though other species common names involve the wildcat term, they are not part of the species complex and should not receive the tag.
