Species: bear

Bears, mammals of the family Ursidae, are caniforms, or doglike, carnivorans. Although only eight main species of bears currently live today, they are widespread and appear in a wide variety of habitats throughout the northern hemisphere and partially in the southern. While the polar bear is mostly carnivorous, and the giant panda feeds almost entirely on bamboo, the remaining six species are omnivorous.
Common characteristics of modern bears include large bodies with stocky legs, long snouts, small rounded ears, shaggy fur, plantigrade paws with five nonretractile claws, and short tails. Despite their heavy build and awkward gait, they are adept runners, climbers, and swimmers. Bears are generally bulky and robust animals, carrying large bodies with stocky legs and short tails. Relying on strength rather than speed, bears have relatively short limbs with thick bones to support their bulk. Unlike most other land carnivorans, bears are plantigrade. Despite being quadrupedal, bears can stand on their hind feet and sit up straight with remarkable balance similar to humans.
With their powerful physical presence, bears have played a prominent role in the arts, mythology, and other cultural aspects of various human societies.
