Species: yorkshire terrier
The Yorkshire Terrier (or "Yorkie") is a small dog breed of terrier type, developed during the 19th century in Yorkshire, England. Ideally its maximum size is 7 pounds (3.2 kg). A popular companion dog, the Yorkshire Terrier has also been part of the development of other breeds, such as the Australian Silky Terrier. It has a grey, black and tan coat.
Yorkies are quite a vocal breed, and properly trained ones are thus not suitable for homes with small children.
Yorkies are affected by a number of health problems due to their small size. In addition, some breeders breed undersized "teacup" Yorkies, which weigh less than 4 lb (1.8 kg) and are affected by even worse health problems. Despite this, healthy Yorkies can live anywhere between 13-20 years.
The world's smallest recognized dog was a Yorkie. Named Sylvia, she was owned by Arthur Marples of Blackburn, England, and died in 1945 when she was only two years old. She stood 2 1⁄2 in (6.4 cm) tall at the shoulder, measured 3 1⁄2 in (8.9 cm) from nose tip to tail, and weighed 4 oz (110 g).
