A VTuber is an online entertainer who uses a virtual avatar while live streaming or recording videos.

These virtual avatars may be 2d or 3d models, usually puppeted by the VTuber using motion tracking and/or facial tracking. VTubers most often stream themselves playing video games, reacting to video content, and interacting with their audience; VTubers may also sing, draw, animate, cook, unbox collectibles, or engage in other activities while streaming.

Note: This tag is intended to collect VTuber "characters", rather than non-VTuber characters performing as VTubers.

The majority of VTuber avatars are of anime styled animal humanoids — however, there are countless VTubers with anthro, human, humanoid (e.g. goblins, aliens, robots), and even feral animal avatars, all of which may be drawn or rendered in any art style.

In some cases these avatars are not merely a representation of the streamer, but are characters unto themselves with varying degrees of established lore and abilities, who the streamer performs as - as if they are that character. However, this performance usually involves the streamer simply exaggerating their own vocal performance and personality, while both speaking about their real life and casually referencing elements of the character's lore/abilities at times while streaming for thematic or comedic effect, rather than acting in the same sense that a roleplayer or traditional voice actor would.

Where did the term "VTuber" come from?

The term "VTuber" originated as a portmanteau of Virtual YouTuber, however, as VTubers are present on various video platforms, the term is used generically. "VTuber" is both the preferred nomenclature in the industry, and is more popularly used term by fans and the general public.
