Identical twins are the result of one egg cell being fertilized by one sperm cell, after which it successfully implanted in the womb before undergoing cell division and separating completely into two embryos.
Both siblings share 100% of their DNA as a result. This means the resulting siblings are essentially two copies of the same person. They are always the same gender, and outside of hairstyle, they look extremely similar visually. Physical differences between them form much later in development, such as minor differences between their fingerprints.
During development, both embryos share the same placenta and amniotic sac.
