Species: boogie (species)
post #3631283 post #3578426 post #3744888
The Boogies are a fictional species created by the artist ozoneserpent .
These mysterious drones are alien in origin and form a collective under the control of a being that prefers to remain in the shadows. The goal of this being is to assimilate as many people as possible in its collective and remove their individualism . Their name was given to them by Agent Cassandra in reference to classic airplanes, because of the wing-like appendages some of them possess.
They come in many different forms and sizes, but all either consist of a white, latex-like material or are encased in such. (Ozoneserpent actually denied this to be latex, but TWYS comes into play) Also, many Boogies show a black triangle on their front, which serves as their eye. Boogies without this marking aren't blind, but have heavily impaired vision. Due to all Boogies having shared vision, this serves to limit the perspectives they see. Otherwise it would heavily tax their concentration.
Boogies are on the search for more people to add to their collective by encasing them in the white, latex-like goo they are made of. Said process is rather quick and clouds the thoughts of their targets. The moment they are fully covered the victims’ minds will merge with the ‘Hivemind’. The hivemind isn't mind-controlling these people to do their bidding, instead they fuse into one new person. Unable to act out against the Boogies, the minds of the captured people still influence the collective for better or worse.
People, who join the Boogies willingly or give up and hand themselves over to the drones are ‘rewarded’ with a more elaborate form after the dronification is complete. Most of the time this reward consists of wings. The Boogies also seem to listen to their victims if they request to look a certain way after the transformation. For example pink accents to their white latex. Larger breasts are given to those that resist the process. It's anyone's guess why, but they seem to make the subjects easier to control.
The Boogie-goo needs to fully encase the victim’s body, otherwise they can fight back. If the amount of goo is too small the target can just pull it off.
As a result of the events depicted in their story The Boogies the drones changed for the better, opening up to the world and operating way less hostile.
Boogies can be divided into two groups: Hostless Boogies and Boogies with a host.
Hostless Boogies
Hostless Boogies are the larger group of the two. They are drones with different ways of assimilating new prey, but have yet to capture a person and fuse with them. Hostless Boogies aren't as smart as their companions with a host, but are fully capable of preparing ambushes and setting traps.
There are several types of hostless Boogies, who specialize in different simple jobs within the collective. They differ in the strategies on how to best assimilate their targets and their movement.
Boobies
(Singular: Booby)
Boobies are the most common and smallest drone variant of all Boogies. The name ‘Booby’ was given to them following their first documented encounter where they were part of a booby trap. They possess a round body, two small spherical stumps on their bottom side and two ear-like fins. (Their design likely references the appearance of Ozoneserpent’s fursona Ozone )
They are half as big as a person.
The Boobies are fast and nimble, making them difficult to dodge. Their main-strategy is to crash head-on into their target and burst into goo on impact. The body of a flying Booby contains enough matter to encase and assimilate one person. This latex-like material is also able to fit through small gaps to for example catch a person, who hides inside a locker .
Camera Boogies
post #4057039
Camera Boogies are larger than their flying comrades (Around the size of a tall person), but also much slower as long as they don't have a target. These sentries are bipedal with wing-like arms and a head shaped like a small flying Boobie. The bodies of these drones incorporate mechanical parts like wheels, two very large batteries and most notably a camera, which gives them their name.
When spotting an intruder the Camera Boogies will immediately call for back-up to outnumber their target. But this improved vision seemingly comes at the price of heavily reduced hearing. A Camera Boogie didn’t even react to a voice on the intercom talking to an intruder hiding in the same room .
Even without back-up these drones are anything but harmless. The wheels located at the sides of their feet aren't just ornamental, they are fully functional and heavily accelerate the normally rather sluggish Camera Boogie forward. Maneuverability isn't a problem either. After speeding up with their wheels, they can use their arms to break and perfectly perform a hairpin turn to get around corners .
On top of that, Camera Boogies are capable of generating an energy field from the two batteries on their backs. These fields shield the drones from enemy energy-blasts, one of the few weaknesses of the Boogies. Luckily for anyone facing these creatures, the shield can be overloaded with a few additional shots.
Hunters
post #3657703
Hunter Boogies patrol the area for intruders. While large, they can move quietly and capture others. They give up their own mass to transform an intruder into another Boogie by elongating their bodies and putting their mouths over the target(s). They can convert two intruders at the same time. The Hunter’s body bears a resemblance to a big snake (or slug) with a large mouth. They have the same black triangle as an eye as the flying Boobies.
Their name and appearance are most likely inspired by the original Hunter Gammas from Resident Evil 3 (not the remake).
Boogie Traps
post #3823747
The raw liquid latex of the Boogies can also be included in traps. It can’t follow the target if they get away, but if they are bound by the trap or don’t react quickly enough the mass will encase them just as easily. Furthermore, Boogie matter can dissolve in water if treated chemically. If you submerge any part of yourself in it, it will begin climbing out of the water and onto you, but it seems in this form the goo needs more time to react. Swimming or wading through the water quickly is enough to avoid dronification. If small amounts of Boogie goo still latch onto someone, they can simply pull it off.
Sentinels
post #3863250
(Called Wallers by some fans)
The largest of the common Boogies fills in an entire hallway with just their head. Carried by a long segmented body with multiple legs the most striking feature of the Sentinels are their gigantic maw, which can easily swallow a person whole and spit them out as a Boogie. These big fellas possess two glowing yellow eyes located on their lower jaw.
Angels
post #4214523
Angels are huge white beings and the origin of the Boogies. A group of archeologists investigated an alien world and a member of this team found this giant inside ruins she theorized were linked to the domain of angels. A Booby budded off the being and the researcher Lily let herself be transformed. It is still unknown where these 'Angels' come from, what they want to achieve or if they actually have a host inside them. Only one of its kind has been encountered so far and almost all information about it stems from the Boogie hivemind itself, making its validity questionable.
Upon first encountering it, the angel showed to be fully capable of speech, but went mute after the first person was boogified. Its consciousness subducted into the subconscious of the people that become Boogies, allowing them to do things like move the goop with their mind. When no Boogies with a host are present anymore, the angel's personality will re-emerge.
Hosts
Boogies with a host don’t have variants like their hostless brothers, but individuals are easier to be seen (Strange thing to say about a drone collective). The species of the victims are still somewhat recognisable, just a layer of white latex encasing them. It’s heavily implied that the host inside of them enables them to do more complex tasks besides assimilation and that they are just straight up smarter. The cover over their mouths doesn't impair their ability to speak at all and the hosts are capable of breathing through it without problem (Boogies control the density of the goo and make it thin enough to breath through)
During the dronification they lose their original personality and become one with the collective. Clothing the subjects wear during the process gets encased as well, but clothes that gets picked up later on will be worn over the latex. The assimilation is not permanent. The time spent as a Boogie depends on the person, but never more than three years. If the Boogies don't let them go themselves sooner, the covering falls off on its own and they are released. Typically an 'abnormal' phase of days or weeks precursors their release (for Abnormal Boogies look below). Afterwards, the former victims can't be assimilated again.
A rather thick layer of latex surrounds the host's bodies, letting them look a bit taller than before the dronification. The fingers of these creatures aren’t encased individually and it instead looks like they are wearing oven mitts.
These Boogies don’t have any fancy strategy to convert their victims, they just grab them and hold them until the matter has swallowed them. Like Hunter Boogies they use their own mass to assimilate more people. Around their wrists are sometimes thick rings, which thin out during this process. These rings serve as storage for the Boogie-goo. When the rings are used up the Boogies need to shrink the latex covering the host to the point that the hands and feet of the lifeform below become visible. Not enough to free the host or break the mind control.
When not on patrol these beings rest motionless in halls with hoses of Boogie-goo attached to their forehead. Their exact purpose is unclear, but taking into account that the Boogies lose mass when converting people and the hoses seemingly being connected to a big supply of goo it’s very likely that these places serve as refueling stations for the Boogies. Preparing them to capture more victims. These constructs also double as traps. Intruders, who get too close are snatched by the hose and quickly become the new host for a Boogie.
Besides dronifying subjects these Boogies can also reactivate fallen comrades simply by touching them and sharing a bit of their mass (see weaknesses below for more information).
Abnormal Boogies
post #4079523
While loyalty to the collective is all but unbreakable, some hosts regain aspects of their individuality and serve the group in unpredictable ways. These Boogies aren't necessarily more dangerous than normal dronified hosts, but their unpredictability can make each encounter difficult. They might just ask individuals questions or put on maid uniforms and dust off inactive comrades . Or they hold a grudge towards a person that is so strong it makes them overwhelm the hivemind itself, take control of other Boogies and do everything to assimilate their target.
The Hivemind
(or Shadowman, both unofficial names)
The being in charge of all Boogies prefers to stay in the shadows (literally) and was the first member of the collective, who showed the ability to speak. Each new member to the collective fuses with the hivemind into one new person (imagine it like the DBZ fusion). These people also can influence the hivemind in negative ways. When raiders attacked the complex the Boogies inhabiting it had to use their powers offensively for the first time and assimilating these raiders adepted the hivemind to beef up security and become all around more hostile towards intruders. They can move each body it controls individually like a hand, the space between individuals subtracted by their white coating. The hivemind can also speak through the people it controls and has each time the same voice, even when using entirely different bodies.
There is one notable feature that indicates the hivemind is directly in control of a Boogie: Floating blue orbs that appear all around them. Their purpose is unknown, but they can form a glowing blue halo above the Boogie's head.
Upon being asked what their goal is the hivemind replied using lofty words and religious metaphors and didn't give a satisfactory answer. The references to religion also explain the seemingly useless wings many Boogies possess and the halo, which sometimes floats above the hivemind's head. They really believe to be godly/angelic and thus above the people outside the collective, whom they refer to as 'rats' and 'rodents'. This behavior likely stems from a member of the collective being very religious/really beliving the Boogies to be something angelic.
Weaknesses
An electric discharge causes the Boogie-goo to liquify, eliminating hostless Boogies and freeing captured hosts out of their encasement. The electricity also knocks these people out, but at least they are free from the Boogie’s control. But be careful, the goo is only ‘neutralized’, not destroyed. Another Boogie with a host can just touch it to ‘reactivate’ the goo, which will then again encase the unconscious host.
If a Boogie consumes a can of the energy-drink NOS their body bursts . Simple as that.
Bananas. Yes, the fruit. For some reason Boogies can't resist bananas and let people pass without assimilating them if they offer one of these instead. It remains questionable if this trick works with all kinds of Boogies, considering that so far only Hunters have shown this behavior and that most other variants lack a mouth (or have their mouth covered in the case of Boogies with a host).
Besides electricity, the Boogies are also prone to any other kind of energy weaponry. Blasts of energy-guns remove the Boogie-goo from their hosts or completely liquify hostless ones when being hit. If someone is in the midst of being assimilated and gets hit by an energy-blast, it might catalyze a reaction between the potential victim's clothing and the drone's conversion substance. Energy blades are in theory also effective against the Boogies, but due to their assimilating nature any kind of contact to them likely ends in immediate dronification. Close combat is never a good idea when facing a Boogie. So, guns are the far better option.

The Boogiesuit is so far the most potent tool in the fight against the Boogies. It enables the wearer to control the matter the drones are made of. A simple touch of the hand is enough to take the goo away from the Boogies and use it for oneself (Doesn't protect against surprise attacks from behind. The user needs to consciously activate the ability). With enough matter the suit can be upgraded to a proper armor, limbs can be elongated/enhanced to dodge enemy attacks and weapons can be formed. The Boogiesuit has only a limited supply of energy, but this only comes into effect during prolonged/repeated uses of the ability. Furthermore, the more matter the suit controls the faster its energy drains.
Also, the suit possesses a second ability, 'Boogie's Sanctuary.' It mimics the hivemind's ability to move the individuals from afar and allows the user to swap places with the host of a Boogie. (Basically teleportation)
Trivia
Boogie-goo is edible. (Ozoneserpent gave this information once by accident)
Ozone's story Snowed In takes place in the same universe as The Boogies, but several years after the end of the latter.
