Studio Ghibli (GEE-blee) is a Japanese animation studio most famous for its animated films such as Howl's Moving Castle (2004), Spirited Away (2001), and My Neighbor Totoro (1988) (whose titular character serves as the studio's mascot).
Originally founded in 1985 by Isao Takahata, Toshio Suzuki, and Hayao Miyazaki after the success of Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984; it's retroactively considered to be a Studio Ghibli film), their first film was Laputa: Castle in the Sky (1986), which was directed by Miyazaki and produced by Takahata. The bulk of their output involves one or both men in some fashion. The studio is also famous for its fairly strict "no cuts" stance, due to their horror at how badly Nausicaä had been butchered in localisation.
From 1996 to 2017, Disney distributed Studio Ghibli films in North America; GKIDS is their current NA distributor (and had been used to release some of Ghibli's more controversial/experimental output from 2011-2017).
