I know he ate a cheese is a meme from Tumblr pertaining to a frame from a Hanna-Barbera-era Tom and Jerry cartoon, "Fit to Be Tied" (1952). In the episode, during a scene where Jerry Mouse is being served cheese by Tom (under threat of Spike), Jerry swallows whole a wedge of cheese larger than himself, smiling as his body conforms to that the shape of the wedge. The joke would be reused with Nibbles in "Little School Mouse" (1954), and was referenced in a 2022 anime short released by Cartoon Network Japan in celebration of Cheese Day (チーズの日 Chīzu no hi; November 11th).

Six decades after the episode's debut, in two since deleted Tumblr posts, user Papayajuan posted in 2014 a frame of Jerry from the scene, which was reblogged in 2015 by Hakushokuwaisei with the caption "i know he ate a cheese."^[sic] Association of the phrase with the frame was strengthened with further site activity, including the creation of the I-know-he-ate-a-cheese Tumblr blog.
