A drawing tablet, also known as a graphics tablet, pen tablet, or digitizer, is a computer input device that enables a user to draw or write by hand using a tablet pen on an electronic surface or monitor display (these are known as "screen tablets") as they would a pencil and paper. A drawing tablet also allows the user to navigate their computer as they would with a computer mouse or trackpad, using the pen to move the cursor. "Screen tablets" also double as a second computer monitor.
Drawing tablets are extremely important tools for creating digital drawings and digital paintings, the majority of artwork on this website was made using a drawing tablet.
Important Note
Drawing tablets should not be confused with tablet computers, while both are informally called "tablets" they are different devices. A tablet computer is a full computer in tablet form, a drawing tablet requires a wired or wireless connection to a computer in order to function. Drawing tablets are often larger than a tablet computer, and usually depicted sitting on desks, with smaller ones, in some cases, being shown resting on the user's knees as they draw.
Tablet computers may be used to create art in the same way a drawing tablet is, but if they show signs of being a tablet computer, such as their size, mobility, and having features such as a rear facing camera, they should be tagged as tablet computer, not drawing tablet.
