In family law, adoption is the process by which a person assumes the parenthood of an individual born to other parents. In other words, it's an institution by which a family bond or filiation is created between an adopted child and their new adoptive parent(s) and sibling(s).
This process may also be informal, as not all fictional universes have a legal adoption system in place, or depict/mention it. For example, if a character in a setting atypical from modern society, such as a feral character in a natural setting, is depicted with their foster/substitute parent, the adopted tag would still apply, even if it can't be assumed legal adoption has occurred.
(In short, this tag is for characters who consider themselves family but are not biologically related, and are not also legally related through marriage, such as being step-family or in-laws.)
Common reasons for adoption
- A child is an orphan
- A child is voluntarily abandoned by their biological parents
- A child who has been taken away by child protection authorities
- Because a couple is infertile
- For male/male or female/female couples wishing to start a family
On e621, this lore tag is used if a post depicts at least one adopted character accompanied by at least one of their relatives. If an adopted character is depicted as having romantic/sexual relations with at least one of their relatives: the pseudo incest tag should also added.
