Character: scp-040

SCP-040 is a human character from the mythos of the SCP Foundation website. Her debut story, SCP-040 — Evolution's Child, was posted in July 2008 by a writer known as Kain Pathos Crow and rewritten by Djoric in 2012.

SCP-040 is a female human born circa 2000, an eight-year-old child as of her story's writing. At this age, she stands 111 centimeters tall and weighs 20.7 kilograms. Her appearance is largely standard for humans aside from having naturally bright pink hair and an unusual form of heterochromia; her right eye is green and fully functional, however she is blind in her left eye, which has a yellow iris and black sclera. She is also notably fragile, as her skin blisters and bruises easily and her brittle hair falls out regularly.

Beyond her abnormal appearance, SCP-040's most noteworthy trait is her ability to manipulate organic matter and create new organisms designated SCP-040-1. Through significant focus, she may alter the physical characteristics of a organism to certain limitations. SCP-040 is most capable of altering multi-cellular animal life, as she shows great difficulty in plant manipulation and an incapability of interacting with micro organisms. She also necessitates living tissue to create an SCP-040-1, and can only manipulate dead tissue by incorporating it into a living organism as a basis. Usage of her ability for more than a few minutes at a time causes her intense headaches and nausea. SCP-040-1 can be modified by SCP-040 only once, but it is not known if this is a hard limit or something SCP-040 can improve with practice.

Using her abilities, SCP-040 performs primarily cosmetic modifications when creating SCP-040-1; most often simple color and pattern changes, but sometimes more involved shifts in anatomical form and structure. These morphological changes are limited to what is physically possible by known biology, and the creation of anatomical features do not provide any function unless there sufficient support (i.e. wings do not allow an SCP-040-1 flight if there is none of the required musculature needed to achieve lift with them). She is capable of forming new organs, but this is among the limits of her abilities, as attempts have an approximately one-in-three success rate. SCP-040's control also becomes increasingly unreliable and inaccurate if she tries to create something on a smaller scale or in more complex detail.

As an individual, SCP-040 is a generally cooperative and sociable child of slightly above-average intelligence. According to her child psychologist, SCP-040 exhibits an emotional state expected of a child in her age group, accounting for her status as a subject of prolonged containment and parental separation. She quickly became accustomed to her containment by the SCP Foundation, and responds well in her arranged socialization programs, befriending other young girls designated SCPs such as SCP-134 and SCP-191. She has a hatred for peas, as they were the only things she ate for dinner before entering the SCP Foundation's custody, but admits that she has a better opinion of green beans. She is also unbothered by being the source of nutrients for one of her creations, SCP-040-1a, which she feeds her blood. This, along with SCP-040-1c and SCP-040-1j, are allowed to be in SCP-040's custody for her mental well-being. She has been highly distressed by an experiment in 2009 where she created an SCP-040-1 involving a human corpse.

SCP-040's history before her discovery by the SCP Foundation is almost entirely unknown. She has no knowledge of her parents, and doesn't question her previously being told she is orphan. She was discovered in 2008 following a raid on the Keys to the Kingdom Christian Charter School for Gifted Youth, a school in Colorado that a rogue CIA agent with classified information was hiding at under the alias "Henry Green". At the school, SCP-040 was one of fifteen children referred to by numerical designations and tended to by nurses while undergoing various experiments directed by "Mr. Green". She recalls how she and the other children would be forced to wear helmets of unknown purpose and sit quietly, as well as being punished by being locked in their rooms. After the successful raid on the school and termination of "Henry Green", SCP-040 was the only one of the children identified as anomalous in nature and was taken into Foundation custody.
