Handcuffs are a type of metal wrist cuff primarily used by police forces to restrain the hands of someone being arrested by applying them on their wrists behind their back.

The ability to easily restrict a character's movement makes handcuffs a useful tool in BDSM activities. Handcuffs are especially good for novice bondage enthusiasts, as anyone can render themselves or their partner helpless without needing to know rope tying techniques, or purchasing more heavy duty (and expensive) bondage gear. Handcuff usage without more restrictive bondage elements is generally considered a form of light bondage, but not all depictions of handcuffed characters are considered bondage. The earlier example involving a character being arrested should be tagged as bound, and possibly restrained instead.

Handcuffs are generally not considered shackles for organizational purposes. Check the shackles page for more information and exceptions.
