"Style emulation" describes art that imitates the distinct visual style of another artist, medium, art genre, or specific piece of media (e.g. a cartoon, anime, video game, etc.)

Style emulation is often done for comedic effect or to depict an unlikely or bizarre crossover of art style and content (e.g. a character that is normally drawn in a simplistic, toony style depicted in a gritty, realistic art style). Note that the image doesn't need to reference or parody the property it is an emulating.

Style emulation may include...

Style emulations of video games may involve game elements such as the user interface being visible, text boxes for dialogue, health bars etc.

style crossover

inspired by formal art
